Not a five-star stay

We recently returned from a trip to London where we stayed at two different hotels. The first hotel stay was for four days, the second, for one. We figured we would splurge a little and stay at a more pricey place for the final night and chose The May Fair. We were impressed by the style of the lobby, and the staff was very friendly and helpful, but as soon as we entered our room, we felt we had wasted our money. The room had no character. It felt like a box with a bed. It was definitely stark and not what I would call stylish. I think the pics on the website make it look much better than reality. The bathroom was also lacking. There wasn't a door like you would normally expect. It was instead a frosted glass door that slid closed. Not the best for privacy when using the toilet. And the closet was inside the bathroom (to make it look bigger), and the shower splashed out everywhere. I would not recommend this place to anyone and don't plan to stay hwere again. Not that it's awful, more because there are so many other great choices in London for less money.

Great hotel in a great location

Hotel room was a good size and bed was very comfortable. This hotel is very comparable to 5 star hotels in the US. Hotel is located 1.5 blocks from the Underground that connects to 2 Lines (Picadilly and Jubilee) so it is very convenient to get around. Walking distance to shopping, restaurants, Hyde park, and Buckingham palace. We enjoyed a nice meal at Langdon's a block away. Across the street there is a grocery store to buy any necessities.

I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do.

The location is great. But I heard so many "I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do" until we finally got to check- into our room at 3:30 pm!!! Shower time is messy. The bathroom is extremely small, NO rugs on the floor, the shower spills all over the place. The shampoo destroys you hair. Make sure you take your own. Hairdryer so, so. It's pretty run down considering it went through renovation recently. If you're going to spend all day out in the street, it is ok.

You can actually see the dining room of NOBU from some rooms. We had our best Japanese restaurant experience there!

Not Value for Money!

A Hotel at this location can be much better. It needs to understand that location and a busy recepton is not the only ingredients of a good hotel. From non working / crowded lifts whihc were neither smooth nor clean to rooms in which you can hear the whole hotel talk and walk to towels in the bathrooms which are over used and over worked to a large room with dirt carpets to no proper working table / desk. there were a lot of issues whihc need working. The reception did not have computers running when i checked in so I had to provide them with all booking details.

This is one to avoid

When the quality of a hotel is so bad that it motivates one to write about it for the first time, you know you are dealing with a problem. I arrived off a trans Atlantic flight earlier than the allotted check-in times and was told no rooms were available. That is fair and understandable, but the promise to follow up with me when they did come available never materialized. Front desk attitude was aloof...and left me feeling like I was doing the hotel a favor by gracing them with my presence. Porters, when I did eventually get a room, took forever to deliver my bags. Rooms were tiny and expensive, probably a casualty of London, but furniture was cheap and the sense of luxury diluted by the poor quality. Televisions small too, entertainment selection dated. The hotel's strategy is modern chic with a minimalist style but ends up being modern disaster with a bad attitude.

spoil yourself at the mayfair

the hotel is one block from green park metro station, on the picadilly line. we arrived at 11:30AM, after an overnight flight from the US. We got a room immediately. the bed was very comfortable, and the bathtub very big, and filled quickly. lots of hot water. we got a "bed and breakfast" rate--the breakfast was amazing. there were free computers in the business room

Not US 5-star quality, but good!

For European hotel rooms, these were very nice; however, they do not compare to a 5-star hotel in, for example, NYC, so don't expect the hotel to knock your socks off. The rooms are small, adequately equipped, but hardly luxurious. The staff is accommodating, but for the best service you must dress up. The area is quiet, yet just a block away from the bustle of Picadilly, Knightsbridge, Buckingham Palace, and a few blocks more to Trafalgar Square. Really great location for tourists! And if you like to shop, this is close to Bond Street, Oxford Street, Fortnam & Mason, the Burlington Arcade, Picadilly, Saville Row--you name it, it's close to the Mayfair. The food in the restaurant and bar was very, very good, including afternoon tea, but the staff seemed short-handed most of the time and could not handle the service when more than 1/2 full of diners. If you are able to get the breakfast buffet and afternoon tea included in the cost of your room, do it! It's a good deal. There is a Sainsbury (grocery store) just across the street where you can pick up snacks, sandwiches, beer and wine, etc. There is a tube stop (Green Park) conveniently located just around the corner. You can also hop on one of the bus tours at that location, which is handy. All in all, a good place to stay, although I would NOT recommend it for younger children (under 10). Our children were 12 and 16 and loved it.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

For more affordable family dining, head out of Mayfair and up to Bloomsbury--near the British Museum--or towards Picadilly Circus. The food in Mayfair is good, but pricey!
