This excellent small boutique hotel is based in the centre of London, very close to the British Museum & all the attractions of the West End. It's an elegant 4 star townhouse where your comfort is paramount and the friendly staff will make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Hotel's couches are for sinking into & the beds are designed to give you the soundest night's sleep. Outside you'll find a private garden, just for hotel residents, where flowers fill the generous space with color and delicate fragrance and a fishpond ripples softly in the quiet. It's hard to believe you're in the heart of London's West End, but you are.

Rooms vary but great location

The first room was a small four floor walk up that had a tiny bathroom and old plumbing. Staff was very nice about changing our room to a much more comfortable one for the same price. Internet requires separate password for each device and new password each day.

Did not endear itself

I was too hasty based on [...] 4-star rating. Location is good: Gower St. is a series of townhouse hotels probably all like Academy. NO ELEVATOR --this shd be indicated in the [...]listing -- and room was on topfloor; fortunately there was a friendly young helpful porter to help w/ the bags. The bathroom is unacceptably small: the sink dimensions are 8" X 15". We asked to change but were told nothing available and basically sinks all the same.Staff was OK though leaving my husband asked what terminal Delta is at Heathrow and the guy breezily said 3 but it was 4; fortunately we checked on our own. [...] rate did not include breakfast wh was L10 or so and my husband said did not look particularly inviting.

Nice location, but not much of a hotel

The hotel has a reasonably nice reception and outdoor patio. Otherwise things are fairly nondescript. The single room was reasonably sized, but the bathroom wasn't particularly nice (no place to put soap or shampoo while you are taking a shower for example). The room was relatively drab and uninteresting. The air conditioning also didn't cool, which made the room fairly uncomfortable. The hotel was willing to switch me too a different room, but that meant repacking everything so I didn't. For a hotel that charges a healthy rate, though, these kinds of things shouldn't be issues. There was definitely not an atmosphere of excellence.

Good location, upkeep not so much

If you are looking for British experience - than this is a good choice for you. Tiny rooms with 1950-ies style. Room 22 has spots on its ceiling, spots on wall paper, spots on the carpet. No spots on bed linen - phew! Free Wi-Fi is 0.3Mbps :))) And you need new password for each device each day! Location is great and seemingly safe. It is just few blocks from great taverns and pubs. It is 15 min from Euston station, 10 min from Tottenheim subway (Goodge St. was closed). You can just walk to British Museum and such. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Spacious rooms for a good price

I stayed in a more expensive hotel for a few days and decided to stay in London an extra day and had to change hotels. This place was cheaper and the room was much larger. ONly downside is that there was no elevator and I was on the 4th floor. However, I had them carry up my suitcase. There was no way I could have done it. The only other small issue was that there was very little water pressure and the shower could use some good grout cleaning.

The Academy Hotel

The Hotel staff at The Academy are first rate - very helpful and provided good advice on travel within London, sites to see, how to negotiate the city. The room was less desirable. We are extremely seasoned European travelers and the room was exceptionally small and we know small European hotel rooms. Basic things, such as outlets for recharging various electronic devices were notably absent. The room was clean but the washroom toilet did not flush well and there was absolutely no place to put toiletries when shaving, cleaning up, etc... again, very cramped space. My advice, if you value creature comforts is to look elsewhere.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Great restaurants on Charlotte St. in this part of Bloomsbury neighborhood. Numerous options: Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, etc... and very good food, indeed.

Great Location but Needs Improvement

The Academy in Bloomsbury boasts an excellent location for enjoying London, especially the British Museum, Soho, and the theatre district. Our first night there was inauspicious: we were given a small room on the top floor, four flights up with a window (opening onto a scaffolding) that wouldn't close. It was obvious that the window had been broken into. The staff quickly moved us to another room, a suite two flights down, that was a lovely compensation and much better value for their high prices: spacious, comfortable, elegant. They offer an additional-cost breakfast but we didn't take it. The Academy is a mixed bag of nice boutique rooms with good beds but with shabby stairs and halls and no lift. Another drawback: the high-speed internet doesn't function well, if at all, and is far from high speed.

Great location, very old, small

The hotel is located very close to totenham court and oxford street, the room is small and except for the bed, there is not enough room to do anything. the building is old and doesnt have an elevator included, but for a quick visit in london for solo travelers you get what you pay for.

great location, veru clean and nice

great location, 5 min. walk from Totenham court rd and the center of town made our life easy. The hotel itself is very small, but the rooms were very clean and nice, epeciaaly in London terms. Overall I would say we got what we paid for. If you want to stay at the hotel, make sure you ask for a room on the back, some people might fint the street a bit noisy at mornings (not us though).

Lovely staff, cozy and comfortable room, great location

I truly enjoyed my stay at The Academy and very much hope to return. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was tidy and comfortable. The apples and sparkling water were a nice, friendly touch. The location is wonderful and close to just about anywhere you want to get to in central London, the City, Southbank, Marylebone, etc. As a traveler on an early morning flight from the U.S., it might have been nice to be able to get into the room a bit earlier, but I understand the constraints. Overall, a lovely place to stay!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There are several grocery stores close by. The Tube stop is close, but walking also gets you to many places easily!
