The hotel is ideal for all travellers on a tight budget due to its location and public areas which are full of character. (0708RPL) The exterior is typical of other 1950s town buildings in predominantly red brick with a few subtle Art Deco touches. The hotel is situated close to Russell Square in Bloomsbury, just a short walk from Euston and King’s Cross mainline and underground stations. Also within walking distance are London's Theatreland and the British Museum.

Find Somewhere Else

The mouse running across the bar was the final straw for me. It's in a decent part of London, but there are other hotels in the area I'll probably check out next time.

Simple room for a good price.

Great corner room with a view of the square, plenty of space. Had to get used to turning on the dressing table lights from the switch at the entryway—but then we got a lighted mirror! The bed was comfortable; linens looked and felt like brand new. The bathroom offered tub and shower and we found both satisfactory. You do want to use the lift to the left of reception. The one in the center of the lobby, while larger and equipped with a pleasant voice, is inexplicably slow. Staff at the concierge desk was great. We even got the answers we needed about service times at the Abbey. Made up for the clerk at reception who did not seem happy in this particular line of work. This is a fine hotel in decline. What appears to have been the dining room at one time is now open for breakfast only. There is a bar, but the "Lounge" (not sure of the distinction} was behind locked doors. Accessible through the lobby is a "wine bar" offering a small menu with Mediterranean influence in a diner like atmosphere. It was not evident whether this enterprise was part of the Hotel or separate. Room service was offered although we did not avail ourselves. Our plan included continental breakfast, but the complete meal buffet including hot dishes cost an additional £4.50. Evidently this varies according to your plan. If you have the appetite for a full meal between 7 and 10 AM, the buffet is well worth it. This location is served by four bus routes, with several more within two blocks, most of which have 24 hour service. There is also a tube entrance within four blocks.

Buy an Oyster card, rechargeable bus pass, online. Easier than producing change and more economical than paying as you go. WAY more economical than cabs and you get a great view from the top deck of the bus.

The Tavistock was a nice/ quiet hotel

The rooms were comfortable and clean and the staff helpful and friendly. We would rate it with lots of +++ except for the wi fi . So if that is not a concern...This is a good choice for London tourism. Clean, quiet. Our main concern is that the wi fi connection did not work . We had to go to another hotel to use their wi fi which did work. The porters tried valiantly to help us and several others in getting it working. i think the wi fi is weak...we moved all over the lobby w/ our lap top.... it worked once. The hotel needs a new wi fi or better yet ethernet options.... I appreciated the hotels maid services and their prompt and thorough care of our room during our stay. I also appreciaed the dining room staff. The waiters / waitress were top notch. The porters were terriffic as well.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Though Russell Square is the closest TUBE station. There are 2 others ( north ) that are easily asscessible Euston and Kings Cross. Coming from Heathrow ....you can save time/ money by taking the rail ( non express) train to either of these stations and walk from there.
