Dining

THE ROSE LOUNGE
Fresh roses and live harp music are the backdrop to this cozy London restaurant and tea lounge, a pretty space of plump seats in vivid pink and red. Afternoon tea or champagne are the perfect accompaniments to quiet conversation or browsing the library.
THE BALCON
French and British cuisine meet at this lively London restaurant with unexpected touches: charcuterie of Welsh and French meats, a private dining room behind silk curtains, a champagne tasting table reached by oak spiral stairs.
ST JAMES BAR
An extensive list of wines and spirits is served alongside cocktails and exclusive champagnes in this quietly cozy London bar. Accompany your tipple of choice with a tasty snack or French-inspired plates like homemade foie gras terrine.

Plusses and minuses

I've stayed at the St. James before and it is a good hotel. The new spa is great. We had a massage there and we both loved it but the computerized locker wouldn't let me back in and they had to get security to open it. Not a big deal though. The "delux" room is TINY. We ordered room service and there was no place to fit the room service cart. I thought I remembered the rooms as being bigger. So at any rate I upgraded us to a junior suite (it's really just a bigger room) but it smelled of cigarette smoke. I know that's not the hotels fault but I was annoyed. When you get the suite they include the honor bar at no charge but watch the final bill because all the honor bar items were on the bill but taken off when pointed out. On the plus side the hotel is perfectly located and the staff tries hard.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are some great indian restaurants off of Picadilly circus and we enjoyed the play "39 Steps" which is a short walk from the hotel.

Second stay, exceeded expectations both times.

Spent a week in Jan 14 and was truly impressed by the hotel and staff so I chose this hotel again when I needed to be in London for another 5 days in Feb. Again, the staff was exceptional in all areas (reception, porters, bar, housekeeping). The hotel size is more intimate, which I believe allows for better service. I opted for a larger room both stays and in both cases it was very comfortable. This time my room had a mini espresso machine which was a nice surprise. I have stayed at three different Park Lane hotels previously and found the location of the Sofitel St. James to be much better. Steps from several theaters, Trafalgar Square, National Gallery, countless restaurants and shopping. It will be my first choice again when returning to London.

great location!!

stayed at Sofitel St. James for two nights in July 2012. location could not have been better. Picadilly lane (Subway or Tube) station was only 3 min. walk, and the park was only 5 min. walk or less. if this is your first time in london, this is the hotel you want to stay at!

Great theaters are all around. But book your own ticket. The concierge here uses a service that charges an extra 20 pounds.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Dining in London can be expensive, but within a block of the hotel is a Testa , which has all manner of ready made food, huge salad bar, every kind of bakery good, fresh fruit, beverage you could possible want, all for reasonable cost. Busy at lunch hour with London Office staffers, grabbing a bite
