Bed Bugs at the Rose Court Hotel

The Rose Court Hotel is near Paddington Station and in a small courtyard, Talbot Square with a quaint garden in front. This area is filled with hotels, some probably just as bad as the Rose Court, some better. Face facts and realize that you will probably have to pay at least double what you pay at Rose Court to get a decent room in the area-do you want your vacation ruined? No, then pay more. At one time The Rose Court was probably a quaint and elegant London Hotel, but that shipped sailed about 75 years ago. They have a lounge area that has wireless internet and a computer (you must pay to use that) and chairs and a large screen TV, that is not too bad. They serve breakfast in the basement, they bring toast to your table and they have baked beans (a strange British breakfast food), green eggs (Dr. Suess anyone?) that weren't meant to be green I am sure, tea, coffee and juice, not great, not horrible--I wouldn't write home about it. We got a family room on the 1st floor (above the ground floor). It was a large room and had a double bed and two twins. We had a view of a dirty court yard filled with trash (fine I can live with that). The bathroom was big, had mold (I can live with that too). The toilet seat was literally not attached and would fall off if you sat on it (squatting anyone? Fine, I can live with that too, for the price). What I cannot live with is BEDBUGS. I went to sleep with all the lights on, I checked the beds and saw no bugs. I woke up about 3 am with my chest and arm itching horribly. UH OH! Checked out the bed and saw a bug crawling on my pillow. Took a video and saw another bug crawling up the wall. Took off my sweater and saw a bug on me! YUCK! Took the pillow with said bug to front desk to prove that they have bed bugs. The front desk person acted very surprised and said, we don't have bugs, I don't know what happened! Guess what Rose Court? You do have bugs and you need to close for at least one week and fumigate and kill all of the bed bugs-that is unsanitary, disgusting and you will end up losing money and maybe be closed down, so deal with it. The Rose Court has the potential of being an elegant establishment once again. But, at the VERY LEAST, close and rid yourself of the bugs! We did get our money back (although we had to pay for the night we stayed-great, I paid to be bitten by bugs!). We moved to another hotel, and paid double, a couple of blocks away, the Shaftesbury. It had cable in the room (Rose Court does not), fluffy down comforters (bug free!) as opposed to Rose Courts nasty unwashed bedspreads and "tartan" blankets infested with bedbugs, a toilet seat that was actually attached and internet in the room. Do yourself a favor and pay more for a nice stay, it is worth it for your hygiene and peace of mind!

On arriving at the hote lwe were

On arriving at the hote lwe were offered the basement room or the 5th floor which had no lifts and seeing we had 2 heavy suitcases and had just got off a 13 hour flight we picked the basement room, the front desk person advised us that the room was very clean and tidy, I guess you know were this is going... The room was very small, the blinds didn't close, there was evidence of termites throughout the room. Showering was interesting, you either had boiling hot or cold water. I guess you could bypass all of the above as an experience,, until we decided to go to bed and discovered the pillowcases were filthy and in the early hours of the morning the hotel staff were using the room next door to get the breakfast ready and we were woken up due to the light filtering thru the blinds... On the positive side the hotel is located very close to Paddington station and there are plenty of shops and food outlets. Breakfast was good and they also have plenty of tourist pamphlets.

Better than sleeping under a bridge

Reception has friendly and professional. The room was rather a shock, on the ground floor, with a minimum of interior but no window. The AC had the sound of a starting jet. The room was not worth its price but I guess this is what one can charge in London.

Hotel is a good base

Hotel was a good base for family travel. It would be more helpful if you could book room type--double bed or twins--beforehand, though staff was helpful about moving us to a twin-bed room the next day. Hotel seemed to be occupied by mostly young adults on group holidays, so it was noisy in the evening when they were leaving; but we found it quiet at night and comfortable though hardly luxurious.
