Rooms

The hotel carefully preserved original features of the newspaper printing house. Each bedroom at The Scotsman is individually designed, with great attention to detail, offering the highest level of comfort. Twin, double, suite, and family rooms are available, as well as a penthouse. Egyptian cotton bedspreads, safes, privacy hatches, satellite television, DVD players, and voicemail are standard in all rooms. Features

North Bridge Brasserie & Bar fuses grand Victorian architecture, dramatic interiors, and contemporary styling. The building, more than a century old, housed The Scotsman newspaper. The restaurant was cleverly converted from the newspaper's old reception hall, where traders and merchants would buy copies of the newspaper or place their advertising. The brasserie serves modern Scottish dishes celebrating the best of Scotland and offers a carefully planned wine and whisky list. Lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea are served daily. Private dining facilities are also available.

Guests have complimentary access to the hotel's spa, which features seven treatment rooms, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, and fitness classes, such as yoga and Pilates.

Good choice for sighseeing

We spent four nights at The Scotsman. The common areas are lovely owing to the historic nature of the building and the location is great --just steps to the main train station and well-located to major sights. Other pros: Comfortable bed; nice bath; room safe and amenities; friendly, efficient staff; free wifi; restaurant is pretty good. Our room (904) was quirky -- bi-level with the sleeping area up a 4-5 steps from the bath. Small dormer window. Complaints: No bedside table on one side of the bed; room was dark despite lots of lighting (low wattage); Ironing board and robe took up most of hanging space in closet.

Perfect for a city break

I have never had such a warm welcome, especially at a UK hotel. From the doorman's handshake to the receptionist's recommendations, everything was perfect. We had booked a study room but were upgraded to a junior duluxe with a little turret nook that was beautifully fitted out. The only disappointment was the bed size - a small double which was cozy for two, although some of their rooms have larger beds. We'd booked the hotel in part because the rooms came with a full Sky Sports package (my other half is a golf nut and it was Master's weekend): however, this wasn't working. In the end it was OK because we could get the BBC coverage, but had this not been available it would have put a dampener on the night. We had room service dinner which was perfectly adequate (the privacy hatch in each room is a nice touch) - an item was missing but brought within a couple of minutes of us pointing this out. All in all, a thoroughly pleasant hotel and very good value for money.

Not quite 5star

A lovely large window allowed us to look at lots of air conditioning units with not even a curtain ( apart from the very heavy dark one) to camouflage them . Still don't know where the smell of meat stew one night and fresh bread the other came from, but the receptionist assured me that our room will be specially cleaned!? Insufficient lights didn't allow you to read apart at the desk, but that light bulb was broken and it took three attempts to get a replacement. Staff were very pleasant without exception. Breakfast offered a good choice, so it could have been great. It wasn't.

Sometimes the merchants take dollars and thats a better exchange rate, especially for large purchases. Check with the merchant first.

Great Stay in Central Edinburgh

The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive and really make the hotel. The location is central to all the main attractions - limiting the need for taxis. The only negatives were that the bed was small, the room was hot and internet access was a separate charge. Expect old world charm.

This hotel is in a fantastic location

This hotel is in a fantastic location in the centre of Edinburgh. The quality of the rooms and service from the staff certainly were as would be expected of a 5* hotel. I had a really comfortable stay here and would certainly return again without hesitation. It also has a free spa and pool for guests- although I did not have the time to try them.

Awesome Hotel!

This hotel is of the highest quality. The bathroom shower was heavenly. The hotel provided robes and slippers, has a pool and spa and each room has a fully stocked bar. After we checked out they allowed us to store our luggage at the hotel while we went site seeing. They are conveniently located across the street from the train station. The only thing that was messed up was that they offered a complimentary bottle of water and a newspaper to only one of the couples in our group. The rest of us didn't get the same offer. The criticism is not a complaint but a statement to the staff for the sake of consistency. It was the best hotel we had during our 10 day trip.
