Good but not great.

Great location, friendly staff, but only one small elevator for the entire building - and some maintenance problems like shorted lamp cords, sewer gas smell, dirty woodwork, etc. Hotel Manager should be on top of these things. Those concerns aside, I would stay here again.

Fantastic getaway for business or pleasure!!

The room is unusually big for an European place. It's quiet at night and close to everything that you need: restaurants, princess street shops, mall, museums, the castle and many more!! What a wonderfull experience here! Love it every minute of it!

Long weekend sightseeing

This hotel is nicely located in Edinburgh's "new town". Built in the 18th Century, the area has wide grid patterned streets lined with fine Georgian buildings giving the area a pleasant feel. There are plenty of local restaurants and bars nearby. And the old town is only a short walk up the hill (approx 5 to 10minute stroll) making the hotel perfectly located to enjoy all the main tourist sites but yet be away from the noise and feel of crowding. The hotel itself has friendly and helpful staff. Facilities are clean and rooms are comfortable and reasonably priced. I was very happy with the stay here. I would however recommend venturing away from the hotel for food and drink. This is not only a reflection on the hotel (poor availability and rather steep prices). It is also a reflection on the area in which the hotel is situated; a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, cocktail bars and pubs are but a short walk away. Overall I would recommend this hotel and will be using it again when visiting the city.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The Royal Mile is a short walk from this hotel. The daytime attractions are well known (castle, museums, Mary Kings Close). But try the night time attractions. Particularly recommended is one of the city's ghost walks. I had few expectations but it was a genuinely interesting, fun, and at one point hair raising way, to see the city. You certainly see the main sites in a different light! Try to avoid the main tourist walks with theatrical props. There are some small group walks; I went on the "City of the Dead" tour. I can only describe it as fantastic.

Traveling Solo

Great location if you want to see Edinburgh with minimum fuss. Almost all the sights are walkable and those that are not, the staff was great about answering questions about bus service, which I recommend using. My room was on the small side but there's a comfortable bed, in-room safe, and it was very clean.

Disappointing

Given that this was a 4 star hotel with multiple awards displayed in the foyer, the actual experience failed to convince us. We spent 1 very cold night there last weekend. We registered the heating not working on arrival. We were given instructions to turn the fan to 23 degrees C and let it run. After 2 hours it was still blowing cold air. Turning it up or down seemed to make no difference. The air coming out remained cold. We phoned the reception again and were given a portable electric radiator which kept us from freezing till morning. The water pressure in the bath and shower was pretty much non-existent. It took 45 minutes to shower with water trickling from the shower head. And there was only 1 pillow per person. I really think it takes a little more to make it a 4 star hotel worth its rating.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

To and from the airport, just take the airlink bus for £3.50. It will take you to Waverly Station, just a short walk from there to the George.
