Good Location, OK amenities for the price

The amenities were comfortable but not exquisite for the price. Breakfast was similar, not especially wonderful. Tight quarters were a bit difficult with large bags. Location was within walking distance of all the popular attractions in Edinburgh. Staff was very helpful & courteous.

Well located but some rooms are not great

perfect location in front of the train station. We had a small room facing the back street. the elevator was defective. so we had to climb the 5 floors with our luggage. It was quite noisy and the window was very small so it was dark we could not let the air circulate to cool the room and we did not sleep very well. At check out they had charged me the room price despite it was prepaid. It was a honest mistake I suppose but I am happy I checked. Breakfast is convenient but expensive for what it is.

Mom's 85th birthday!

We were so happy at this hotel and in fact tried to get 3 more nights there and couldn't because it was full. Our rooms were comfortable, the food was better than 2 other place in the city that we tried, and the location was perfect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, anytime!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Buy the 3-day tour bus pass..it included our entrance fees to Holeyrood Castle, Edinburgh Castle, and the Brittania. It's good on 4 different city tour buses too, so we were able to hear some different information on all 4 buses. It's definitely the best value for the money. It was right across from the hotel on the Waverly bridge.

No Regrets

I stayed here w/ a party of four Feb 15-19 2012; two of us in one room, two of us in another, on separate floors. We were more than pleased with our stay. All hotel staff we encountered (Restaurant/Pub, Housekeeping and front desk/Reception) delivered a superb guest experience. Customer service was certainly service with a smile'. A note to Old Waverley Management: I offer the highest compliments to your staff. They were nothing short of outstanding, expressing a willingness to go the extra mile each and every time. This wasn't just the case w/ our party, but w/ other guests I observed them interacting with while there. I wish they all worked for me at my company! This hotel is very affordable for a property so centrally located. The location couldn't be better for exploring Edinburgh & being so close to transportation via rail, bus lines and transit links to the airporrt. .Nearby shops and eateries abound. Rooms were spacious enough & very clean. There were some minor issues w/ rooms being slightly hot, bur we discovered if we kept the bathroom door closed after showering, the heat toned down immediately & became a non-issue. Using this method, we didn't even have to resort to opening a window. We didn't have discomfort w/ street noise from outside- again very minor trafic and construction sounds, nothing that resulted in any type of interference. Normal sounds of a city center- nothing more. The hotel restaurant was in a higher price category, yet we decided to splurge and dine in for dinner one night. Final consensus was the caliber of preparation and fresh quality of the cuisine was welll worth it. After such a positive experience with this hotel, I'd definitely return for a future stay, and would confidently recommend the Old Waverley to others. A big thanks, Old Waverley for an enjoyable, memorable visit!

Staff were polite and friendly

Staff were polite and friendly and the breakfast was great. The bar area was also good and both had great views and atmosphere. The location is perfect for arriving from airport airlink as well as all you want to do in Edinburgh. Room was nice and a good size and I would definitely choose to stay here again.

Avoid at all costs if you need quiet

This was the worst night I have ever spent in any hotel in the world over the last 50 years of travelling. Beware. We were given a room at the back where the noise of fans, possibly from ventilation or air conditioning equipment, was loud, continuous and variable. The hotel was full so there was no possibility of a room change. I spent an hour on Princess Street between 2.30am and 3.30am where it was a lot quieter.

location location location

it was raining when we landed in edinburgh and we took the 25 minute bus ride to the waverly street bridge. the hotel was only about a 2 minute walk from there, probably the closest hotel to the bus stop. my only complaint about the hotel is that when we got there we were told that check in time was 3 p.m. and not 2 p.m. as stated on their webpage. the small elevator does not go to the ground floor. it starts on the second floor, (floor zero) and only holds 4 people. we booked the junior double and i knew it would be small however i was very impressed with the size of the bathroom. it was about a third of the size of the entire room. the bathtub was raised and could be a problem for someone with mobility problems. i wasn't expecting a tv but there was a small tv on the wall. we did not have much drawer space and one of the drawers had the hair dryer in it, plugged into the wall. i found this a little odd. the road in fromt of the hotel is totally tore up for construction as is the sidewalk across the street so all the pedestrian traffic is right outside the hotel's door but that didn't cause any problems for us at all. i would NOT rent a car if i was staying at this hotel because access is very difficult and parking is several blocks away. the hotel bar is open 24-7 which worked for me. it does not accept cash after a certain hour so it does not draw outsiders and is very quiet. all drinks are billed you your room. this was my first trip to edinburgh and i didn't realize at the time that it was festival season. i do plan to go back during a slower time of the year and will probably stay at the old waverly again.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

all the tour busses start and end on the waverly street bridge only several hundred feet from the door of the hotel. i would reccomend buying a 24 hour grand ticket for all four bus tours early in the day and touring the city. this includes the bus to the britannia at ocean terminal and is 15 pounds for adults. you can hop on and off as much as you want. the old waverly is across the bridge from the royal mile but i prefered the dining and nightlife located behind the hotel on rose and george street. we enjoyed eating at "the filling station" and there is one on the royal mile as well as rose street.
