Wonderful blend of traditional and modern in this delightful Edinburgh hotel

Norton House Hotel and Spa is set just a little outside the city of Edinburgh, which only adds to its charm. It has been sympathetically decorated in a traditional style to suit the age of the building; the newer parts of the structure feature a more modern décor. The hotel has 83 guestrooms and those in the older parts of the property are furnished in a country mansion style. Several areas are available for corporate meetings, weddings and other special functions. Norton House Hotel and Spa is ideal for both business and leisure guests looking for a place to relax.

3 Reasons To Stay:
  • Far enough away from the city to have a peaceful ambiance, while being just a few minutes away from all the attractions and sights
  • Close to major transport networks, including the motorway and train stations and only 1.5 mile from Edinburgh airport
  • Fabulous setting for weddings, with all the facilities necessary to make the big day extra special
Norton House Hotel and Spa Rooms
Norton House Hotel and Spa offers a choice of several sized rooms to suit all guests’ needs. The junior suite is a split-level duplex that has a separate lounge area. Classic rooms are available with double or twin beds and the deluxe and executive rooms both come with double beds. The executive rooms have lovely views across the garden area or nearby woodland. Room amenities include television, DVD and CD players, Internet access and 24-hour room service. Business guests may find the secretarial service and the use of audiovisual equipment helpful if they are trying to prepare a presentation for a meeting or to organise an event. There is a fitness center and spa for guests to use and for added peace of mind the hotel also has a doctor on call in case of emergencies.

Dining

Restaurant
We use the most experienced and inventive chefs who use only the finest ingredients to create mouth-watering dishes. The kitchen use only high quality produce, from local suppliers where possible. Our menus are both seasonal and regional, concentrating on local speciality ingredients and dishes. We aim to produce a unique menu and pride ourselves on the fact that everything is homemade, whether it be our pastry chef's cakes for our speciality afternoon teas, the olive oil sourced from our very own Villa Saletta olive groves in Italy or a selection of wine on our extensive wine list, produced from grapes grown in our personal vineyards. We are also renowned for our traditional Sunday lunch and afternoon teas. Enjoy a stomach-filling roast with the family without the hassle of cooking it yourself or indulge your extravagant side with one of our old English afternoon teas, either with or without champagne to add to the indulgence.

Beautiful facility, but restaurant staff was rude at best

The hotel and it's grounds are extraordinary -- very beautiful. "Well kept" is an understatement. The spa is extraordinary. Our room was top notch, very nice, but complex to find as we had to take two elevators to get to it, one up, one down, lots of turns and hallways. This is not a small facility -- it's actually quite large and complex as you can tell they've added on and added on... it's not well thought out. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. If you stay here, I think you'll enjoy your stay, but I'd advise against eating at their restaurant. We presented on time for our dinner reservations. We were well dressed and friendly, but from the time we arrived until we left, we were treated with disrespect and almost no service. We had to flag down the maître d' for virtually everything we needed, because our grumpy waitress wouldn't hardly even look at us. We assumed it was because we are Americans -- because all the Scottish guests next to us received friendly and attentive service. The breakfast wait staff were friendly and helpful -- like a complete different restaurant. While in Scotland for the week, we stayed at four hotels. The Norton House was the most expensive and by far our least favorite (because of the disrespectful way we were treated, not because of the facilities). Heads up -- finding this hotel is not easy. Be forewarned, it sets back from the main road at least a mile on a little path, so don't expect to see it from the main road. Ultimately we had to put in into the rental car's GPS to find it -- roads in the vicinity are complex. I gave the "room comfort" 4 out of 5 stars because we were shorthanded on towels and washcloths and because the "rain shower" experience was more of a forced drowning experience rather than a comfortable shower. Also, although there is a towel warmer there, we could not find any way to turn it on. Other than that, the room experience was terrific.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

The Norton House is very close to the Edinburgh airport. When I was shopping for a rental car, the company SIXT kept coming up as one of the cheapest options. This wasn't a company that I had heard of before, but I opted to give them a try. They were GREAT to work with. I was able to rent a Mercedes with built in GPS navigation for less than other companies were charging for a Ford with a separate dash mount GPS. I'd highly recommend Sixt.
