Great value

Having worked for the Ritz-Carlton is the only thing that stops me from rating this a 5 star. It's not very large, but what it does have is high-quality and very comfortable. The concierge staff is amazing and very knowledgeable, so be sure to utilize their service

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

DO take the bus tour...this from someone who loathes tours. And on the tour buy your tickets to Edinburgh castle, if you plan to go, because it will save you much time and boredom from standing in the purchase line.

Great location with great price

Just around the corner from the Royal Mile this hotel was in a great location for seeing all of the sites in Edinburgh. Hotel was nicer than we expected, personnel were friendly and helpful and food in restaurant was great if a bit on the expensive side (we ate there twice). Rooms had small fridges (great for the beer and wine)very comfy beds, nicely decorated, we felt very comfortable. Concierge helped us organize taxies and even a driver with car for the day to take us to a remote location not on the tourist route. Would have no hesitation going back, top marks!

Great Hotel and a Great Location

We wanted a little indulgence at the end of our two week England trip so booked 2 nights here. We are glad we did. Most comfortable and a great location at the bottom of the Royal Mile. Just a short cab ride from the train station. Very helpful staff.

The library of the hotel is excellent

The library of the hotel is excellent which has made it different from many others. Its location is very conveient and the restaurant is very good. The setback is the swimming pool is managed in a pool manner.

beginning our Scottish vacation

booked last minute on our train from Manchester UK. pleasant surprise with our location and quality but we'd planned on a really nice hotel for the first 3 days of our exploring Scotland trip. Overall Holyrood did not disappoint. Close to the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat (my wife and I are active hikers, runners, local pub lovers, etc.), extensive work out facilities including pool, bus stop in front, informative staff, walking distance to many historic pubs, etc. were all positives as was the price we got it for. the downsides were some staff, a few, were quite stuffy and didn't naturally go the extra step for us (once again though many did). The other disappointment was the restaurant- a confused ambiance without direction, decor seemed more Denny's than high end 4 star hotel's, serving staff and kitchen unprepared for the volume they encountered (a tour bus stopped, yet these were tourists guests of the hotel) so our service was predicated around taking care of the group, found out the restaurant has had different names over the past few years. Other negative was for a high end hotel wi-fi should not be charged, b & b's don't. Then a capper, we asked for one of those small lotions in our experience are usually available in hotels and were told these items are only for top floor guests- you are kidding me right?! yes we would stay here again, as the friendly staff and their service outweighed the unfriendly ones and odd limits to service.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Two things come to mind, ask about discounts on the trains (or buy them before traveling) if you are just a walkup. Our train from Manchester UK to Edinburgh was 30 pounds less expensive by buying 2 separate legs of the journey vs 1 station to station for some reason. It actually was the same train going the distance too. The other tip would be to buy the Discovery Pass for historical sites around Scotland, if you're into these things. After 4 sites we broke even, and still went to another 8 or 9.
