Nice hotel

Excellent hotel, I stayed there by myself and they gave me a huge triple room which was very clean and had comfortable beds. The location was pretty central (about 10-15 min walk to the Royal Mile and the castle). Continental breakfast was also quite good and had a nice variety. The staff was very courteous and helpful. There is a free Internet PC station in the lobby (connection speed was very slow!) The only minor negatives were poor isolation from from street noise (my room was on the ground floor facing the street) and very few tv channels

In the Middle of It All

The "twin room with two beds" we were promised had one twin bed and a pull-out couch. When we complained about this arrangement, the general manager was surly, and adament that "it meets the criteria for 'two beds' in our country!" Not all rooms in this hotel are equal. Some are quite small and not adequate for two people. We were finally moved to a nice size room with two twin beds, which was lovely, and convenient to all attractions in Old Town! It is well worth the 20 pounds additional cost to be on the "Deluxe Floor", and have the Full Scottish breakfast and other amenities included!

Hotel that does the basic very well!

I took the Airlink bus to this hotel from the airport, I had called the staff and they told me that was easy enough - get off at Prince Street and walk down. That was a mistake - it was almost 2 miles to walk, hauling my luggage. So on the way back I paid 5 pounds for a cab to the Waverly Station stop and saved myself a lot of hassle. I'd recommend the bus but also the cab to get here. You could take a cab the whole way but it's be about 3x the cost. That said, it is in an ok spot. Less than 1 mile to the Castle or to the Royal Mile with great shops / restaurants. Lots of sidewalks and plenty of people around so good, safe walking. There really isn't anything on the same block though so be sure you have what you need for the night before you head back. The hotel itself was very basic but everything they had was done very well. The room was spacious, the linens decent quality. They had adequate heating even for me, who likes it very warm, in the middle of the biggest cold snap in the last decade. The wireless internet was good enough that I uploaded 100+ photos in a few minutes. The room service was limited but come on, room service at a Best Western! They were also quite quick and got my order right every time. I did not try the buffet breakfast because I could get sit down breakfast cheaper on the Royal Mile. The staff was very friendly. I arrived at 11am and they got me into a room right away. They were helpful with directions and provided me a map. They also called cabs for me several times which arrived in a matter of minutes. If you want a 5 star hotel with lots of frills, stay somewhere else. If you want good quality cheap, I'd highly recommend this hotel.

Time-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Cabs are cheap and quick but they seem lost with a credit card - be sure to have pounds on you.
