Old World Charm and Unrivaled Service

From the moment I stepped in I felt as if I had been transported back to a finer and gentler time. From the old clock that had been in the original railway station, to the grand staircase, no detail had been overlooked. It was luxurious and comfortable. The staff were all welcoming. When I checked in I was given a room upgrade (I'm not sure why.) I had the most beautiful view of Edinburgh Castle and since the tattoo was on I got treated to fireworks each night. The staff bent over backwards to make sure that all my wants and needs were being taken care of. I'd like to particularly commend the restaurant staff and the team of concierges who helped me with everything from booking tours to helping me with driving directions to remote parts of Scotland. Across the street is the not to be missed bar/restaurant/club Ghillie Dhu. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

The Camera Obscura is an attraction that should not be missed. It is an exhibit of illusions, holograms and morphing machines. The highlight is the camera itself which is a system of mirrors that projects a periscope image of the city onto a flat disc. The guide zooms in selected spots of some of the major sights of Edinburgh in real time.

Excellent concierge at Caledonia

Our stay at the Caledonia Hilton all went well. The rooms, the food and service were all great. However, there was one standout performance by Malcolm at the concierge desk. He was the absolute best concierge we have ever experienced. Great help with travel plans, restaurants, helping with airport and rental cars. He even told me the right club to hit off the first tee at St. Andrews! Simply remarkable.

Simply the Best

We traveled to Edinburgh for my daughter's wedding at the castle in St. Margaret's Chapel. Our hotel was located right in the middle of all the places we wanted to go - plus I had a front row seat to the best view of the castle in town...right from my hotel window. The staff was helpful and courteous and the concierge was the best I've ever had!

Good but not Great

The main floor of the hotel was beautiful and the waitstaff at the main restaurant that served my included breakfast was always friendly. The tea and shortbread in the room were a welcome treat at the end of a long day of touring. The room, though a good size, was average and after a couple of days, the outdated bathroom started to smell musty. While I appreciated that the concierge had an iTouch charger (mine didn't work, even with an adapter) only some of the workers knew where to find it. I was also surprised how little the concierge knew. They didn't know where to pick up the night bus to the airport or how to get a train to Glasgow. Overall the hotel was nice, but not great. The location was good, but the hotel needs some TLC. While I enjoyed my stay and I got a good rate, I would not have guessed that this was a 5 star hotel. Everything in consideration, I would give it high 3 maybe low 4 stars at best.

Great hotel

We only stayed in the hotel one night en route to northern Scotland. The location was great- we were able to walk to the main highlights of Edinburgh very easily from the hotel. Breakfast was wonderful- including an omelette station! The concierge was also very helpful. The only difficulty was in driving to enter the parking lot of the hotel- it is a one way street and very confusing

very nice hotel

This hotel is very nice. The rooms are small, but very clean and quiet, The breakfast is very good. the concierge service is very helpful. They are efficient and accessible. The front desk staff wasn't terribly welcoming, but the concierge staff was. We were able to buy castle tickets and obtain a taxi right there. This hotel is centrally located downtown, so that was nice.
