Time-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

Edinburgh, UK really does not have street signs on poles at corners like other towns. Get a good map and you will find the names of the streets edged in stone on the building. Each corner of the building might have a different street name or different place name. Most of the buildings are Georgian design, so don't reley on a place and then turn at that corner because alot of the buldings are similar in color or size

Good for the price

Great location about ten minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. About 20 Minutes walk to the city centre. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was small but that's what I expected for the money. A 2 night stay for 2 of us cost £110 so you can't ask for much! The room was reasonably clean although the carpet had seen better days and one on the chairs in our room had a burnt iron imprint on it...not sure how they managed that!! The shower was only a dribble but the water was hot (we were worried about this having read some of the reviews on here). We chose to not have breakfast at The Cairn as it was £10 per person.. so for two mornings it would have cost us £40... you can get much cheaper just down the road for a fiver. All in all a good budget hotel where the staff were very friendly.

Unbeatable location for the price

Hotel was fine. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Price was good. Location was good, close to the city centre and restaurants and bars. Rooms are a bit small when compared to North American standards. Everything was fine until the last day when we found a mouse in the room. They immediately moved us to another room for our last day. I would probably stay there again, both for the location and the price.

Decent Value

We stayed twice at the Cairn; at the beginning and end of our 3 week vacation. The first room (on the second floor) was a good value for the money so we booked for the end of our trip. The second room (on the ground floor) was much more cramped (we had to plug in the tea kettle in an outlet on the floor at the foot of our bed) and not as clean.

The Basement on Broughton St. had excellently prepared meals. It was a good value. The clientele is mostly young but the waitstaff was very accomodating to us oldsters.

Quaint in both a good and bad sense.

Overall, this is a nice little hotel. They have taken several row houses and opened them up into hotel space. Now, I requested a single, since I was staying by myself and what I got was a tiny room with a single bed. Not really what I was expecting, so make sure to specify if you need a larger space. I'm a big guy and it was actually difficult for me to get in and out of the shower. Everything worked and I was only staying for a few nights, so it wasn't bad, just tight. No AC, not usually a problem in this part of the world, but it happened to be warm when I was there in July. Edinburgh is putting in a tram line down town, as of summer 2009, it is a long way from being finished. This made it a little difficult to walk to and from the hotel. Taxis had no trouble getting through. (It was a 5 pound taxi ride with tip)
