Great Location
A run down and tacky looking hotel in dire need of refurbishment but inside, the rooms are very clean and the bed very comfortable. If you just want an extremely good value bed and shower for the night you can't beat it. It needs a total refurb. - otherwise it might fall down but what do you expect for the money! It's location cannot be bettered...

Tired but good value
Had a quick stopover in this hotel. Good location, very good price Décor is dated and the black paintwork on the doors a bit too much, but other than that, it did everything it needed to. Clean room/bedding, tea and coffee, comfy bed and helpful staff If you just need a cheap base to explore from this is worth trying. Would I use it again, Yes

Not Bad
Not bad, if you get a room at the front then you can completely forget about a good nights sleep, requested a room at the back but my request was completely ignored. Lots of noise while they work on the very close Birmingham New Street Station with practice tannoy announcements throughout the night at ten minute intervals.

Must try harder
Well, where shall I start with my review? Firstly, the hotel is located in the city centre which is excellent. However, the hotel is very old and cold from drafty single glazed windows and noisy central heating. The plug sockets are all old and if you have phone chargers etc with conventional plugs, you won't be able to plug them in anywhere in the room.

Good no frills comfortable hotel
I liked the more old fashioned nature of the hotel. Its very convenient for the centre of Birmingham and the staff helpful. TV reception poor.

Overnight Stay
Booked the hotel to stop overnight after a concert at the O2 Academy. The hotel room was a twin smoking room, which I had requested. It was quite small, little more than enough for two single beds separated by a shared bedside table at the headboard end of the beds. At the other end, there was a table inbetween the beds which had a very delapidated t.v. on it which had some panels missing from the front, the reception varied from channel to channel, the channels were not in order, the aerial connection was loose, there did not seem to be any Freeview channels and the t.v. remote did not work properly. You had to change the channels and +/- the volume manually. There was only one lamp inbetween the beds. The other lamp was plugged into a socket on the far side of the dressing table and the cable did not reach to the other end of the dressing table, which was an inconvenience. The beds were single beds but they did seem rather small to me, possibly they were economy sized beds. They did seem rather narrow. The undersheet was torn in several places and the duvet barely covered the bed. The pillow was comfortable though. As for the bathroom, the bath/shower did seem rather small and the swingbin provided had a lid that did not fit. The wardrobe had very few hangers but did have some metal 'hanger hooks' that did not have wodden hangers that slotted into them. The carpet was marked/dirty in several places, some looked liked dropped cigarette ash marks, others looked like red wine/ribena stains. The smoking floor is on the 7th floor and once you passed the doors to where the rooms were the smell of smoke was very, very thick. I did make use of the safety deposit boxes, which was a very useful facility, as I needed to safely store some valuables while I was at the concert. All in all, I would rate this a two star hotel, no more. I fall into the 35-40 age bracket and have stayed in hotel in this country, Wales, France, Spain, Russia, Turkey, China and Hong Kong ranging from three-five stars. Overall for £17.50 per person what can you really expect? I slept well, there was a t.v., hot and cold running water. I have booked the same room, again for an overnight stay, next month. What more can I really say? If I want to stay overnight again for concerts in the future, I would use this hotel but I would not recommend it for longer than a three night stay, maximum. Very, very good thing about this hotel is the location. slap bang in the middle of New Street. How much more central can you get!

Short walk from hotel
Do not opt for the breakfast, it costs £10.50. Have a large breakfast at a nearby Wethersppons for £4.50 plus £1.15 for a filter coffee.

Great location but a bit jaded
Stayed for 3 nights while on business. Good points: very near to New Street railway station which was perfect for me, also close to shops and good choice of places to eat in surrounding area. Abundant hot water and plenty of clean towels. Teapot for making a nice brew! Friendly staff. Great value for such a central location. Less good points: Decor rather dated, mattress a bit too hard for my liking. Major gripe: old TV (almost steam-powered!) with limited range of channels. Despite allegedly having Freeview neither myself nor the staff could tune in my choice (More4) - very disappointing and no excuse in the 21st century. This probably wouldn't have bothered a guest going out to take advantage of the nightlife, but after a hard day's work I wanted to slob in front of my favourite TV programme - so it did bother me.

Get value for money
The hotel was in a perfect location, couldn't get much closer to the shops! Everything else was just a quick and cheap taxi journey away. The service of the hotel was good, and the room was very pleasing. I was very impressed with what we received for our money, the only problem we had was that our heating was not turned on so at night it did get cold, but my friend was staying in the room next door who didn't have this problem so was therefore just a room error. Very pleasant hotel and would consider visiting again if stopping in Birmingham.
