Awful hotel room and overall a poor experience. never going back

We chose this hotel for it's close location to New Street station and for it being in the city centre. Check in staff were helpful as expected. We made our way to the room and it was not a sight to behold. The lights were not working and the sheets didn't look clean at all. All the facilities were very basic and the room looked like it had seen better days ages ago. The toilet was in a very poor condition. We left after 30 minutes of checking in as we just couldn't bear staying at this hotel. I know it was a cheap bargain but other hotels do give better service for the same price.

nice hotel in good position. But the staff are surly and rude. Not made to feel welcome at all. I asked for a non smoking room and on the balcony was some sort of pot absolutely full of cigarette ends. I asked for these to be removed but they werent and when I mentioned it no apology was offered. Not only that when I asked for more sugar he wanted me to come down and get it although he did bring it u pin the end.

Noisy street, terrible bed

I booked a room here because it seemed good value for a city centre hotel. The problem is that the roomwas directly above a pedestrian commercial street that seems to be used by all the drunks in Birmingham to come and party until the early hours of the morning. If that wasn't enough to keep me awake, the mattress in my bed was either too old ot too poorly constructed, with springs protruding all over the surface, which made it feel like you were lying on a sack of potatoes. Not a great night's sleep, as a result! The staff were polite if not particularly friendly.

Such a nice surprise, amazing value

I wanted a cheap overnight near New Street Station. At <£25 for a single room on a Sunday night this seemed a great bargain. I thought it would be very basic, probably noisy, maybe too hot - or too cold. The online details didn't give any idea of the quality on offer. The Britannia is indeed about as near New Street Station as it is possible to be. It is situated in a pedestrian precinct, next to Primark and almost opposite an Odeon Cinema, and also looks on to a narrow pedestrian side passage. From my room on the third floor I never heard a sound from the outside, and only the very occasional sound of a distant door closing or a quiet voice on the inside. I was delighted to be able to book a non-smoking room, and there was indeed no sign that anyone had ever smoked there. Although it was a single, when I opened the door with my swipe card I was struck by its spaciousness. There was a little hallway, bathroom on the left, hanging cupboard and shelves on the right. I was blown away by the bathroom. Basin with extensive work surface, loo, BATH!!! with shower, again plenty of space A lavish supply of mini shower gel, shampoo and body lotion, two big new loo rolls, two fat white towels. Scalding hot water. The bedroom was furnished with matching repro furniture, not quite my taste but solid and comfortable. With drawers in the bedside table, and in the TV table and in the desk I had enough storage space to have stayed a month! There were two well stuffed upholstered chairs and an almost full length mirror on the wall. The picture was a pleasant Edwardian print in a high quality gold frame which I longed to take home with me.. The bed was firm enough for a hospital, made up with real cotton sheets - my idea of luxury. The carpet looked new and was clean, the paint on the walls also looked new. Everything else was very slightly shabby. The hospitality tray beside the electric jug on the desk continued the theme of old fashioned quality. .A large china teapot, cup and saucer with metal (not plastic) tea spoon. Sachets of freeze dried coffee and demerara sugar, as well as tea bags and white sugar and cartons of REAL UHT cowsmilk rather than my bete noir the ubiquitous non-dairy creamer. Similarly, the glass in the bathroom was REAL glass, not plastic. So next time I won't weigh myself down with hot water bottle, slippers, universal plug, carton of milk because I needed none of these things. The room was warm but not hot, the floor clean, the basin had its own plug and milk was provided (unless you want more than three hot drinks per night). The reception staff were not effusive, but when I got a little confused in the stairways a member of staff was very friendly and helpful. If I have occasion to visit Birmingham again (and I probably will) I shall certainly be looking for another bargain overnight at the Britannia. The e-booker staff member who helped me with my booking was very nice too.
