Wonderful trip!

Our room was great with a beautiful view! All the staff were polite and friendly! The grounds were beautifully kept! The pools were perfectly clean! The beach was the best we've ever visited! There were plenty of beach umbrellas and lounge chairs, and when the permanently fixed ones were occupied, the staff placed additional ones on the beach as needed. We couldn't have asked for a better vacation!

A Wonderful Surprise

We have stayed at the Royal West Indies twice in the last four years and decided to try The Sands for a change. Although I will say the pools at the Royal West Indies are nicer, the beautifully furnished and larger suites were definitely worth the difference. The large screened balcony with cushioned lounges and chairs was absolutely wonderful. When we arrived the manager was able to upgrade us to a larger suite (even though the first one was lovely) with a nicer view and two separate bathrooms for no extra charge. I could have spent the entire week without leaving that suite and would have been happy! The beach front was beautiful and all of the people who worked at The Sands could not have been nicer. It really doesn't get much better than this.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

All of the suites have a stove, large refrigerator, and a microwave, all well as a fully stocked kitchen. There is an IGA Supermarket a short distance away (I believe the hotel has a shuttle you can take there) whose prices are probably the best you will find on the Island. If you want to stock up on liquor, about 2 miles past the IGA is the 'Wine Cellar' with much better prices than you will find in town.

Beautiful beach

DO take the Outback Adventure snorkel/pirate cave tour offered by Captain Bill. Do NOT take the snorkel trip offered through the hotel. Although it takes you to Iguana Island, which is fairly interesting, the snorkelling area they choose has hardly any fish!! Amazing for an island that is chock full of great reefs! Do NOT expect staff to jump at your every command. Do NOT even expect them to move at a reasonable pace. The best you can expect is service at a snail's pace. But you might get a smile so consider yourself lucky. It's not that people are rude...it's just that mainland service standards haven't yet caught on. But, all in all, a beautiful island.

A superb experience

The Sands is a superb hotel. The rooms are huge, spotless, with king-size beds, and with terraces either overlooking a huge/lush garden or the sea. The service staff is very helpful, always available, and accomodating. The hotel is directly on the Caribbean, and there are numerous pools-from sizable to small. At the sea chairs and umbrellas are always available as are all sorts of water activities. There is a spa, and 24 hour free computer/Internet facilities. In short, the hotel is marvelous. It is luxurious. In addition, Churchill's Restaurant, attached to the hotel, overlooks the Caribbean. The food is excellent, with a wide selection of fish or meat, and the prices are very reasonable (Most meals in the evening cost around $23, while breakfast is around $9 for a full/huge meal, and lunch is about $10-13). The staff at the restaurant are always friendly, efficient, helpful, and available for your culinary needs. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I ate all my meals there. Drinks are very Caribbean. I spent most of my time swimming in the sea at the remarkable and spotless Grace Bay Beach, stopping to drink, and eat, and to periodically make a foray into town, either via a bus supplied by the hotel for a small fee of $9 round-trip, or via taxi (for either $11 or $22 depending on whether you go alone or with others. Anyone who comes to this hotel for pleasure will adore the experience. Together, the hotel, swimming facilities, snorkling, and food made this one of my nicest holidays ever--and I have traveled on research or pleasure to over 70 countries. I recommend the Sands. It's just a wonderful place. There is also a gift shop where you can buy stamps, trinkets and some food to cook in your in-room kitchen. By the way rooms have a washer/dryer, and a coffee maker (with coffee), and cooking facilities. The air conditioning is strong.

Vacation in Paradise

The Sands was a wonderful place to stay. We loved having the extra room this condo style resort provided. The kitchen was well stocked with full sized appliances & equiptment. The living room had comfortable furniture. The kitchen table/ chairs were set up to fit four. There were three stools for the kitchen counter. The bed was king sized and comfortable. The large porch was screened and contained a table, chairs and two recliners. The bathroom was good size. Housekeeping provided fresh supplies and cleaned daily unless you requested no service. The three pools were large, as was the jacuzzi. The beach was set up with enough straw umbrellas and lounge/ water chairs to provide for everyone. The beach was beautiful with a gentle slope & minimal waves, perfect for families with small children. Towels were provided by the beach access. The Hemingway was a convenient place to eat with friendly staff & pleanty of seating. I would recommend The Sands to everyone, from honeymoon couples, families & retirement age. The only possible drawback is that there are no elevators. We were on the top (third) floor & sure got our exercise!

Take advantage of a snorkling excursion. We chose the half day & had a great time. Also, remember to use sunscreen, frequently! It's very easy to get sunburned.
