This is an ideally located property in the historical peninsula of the city. (08/10 SB) This is a traditional looking low rise building. The hotel is located in the heart of the ancient city between Aya Sofya Museum and the Basilica Cistern right on the tram street.

The Empress Theodora hotel wins the award for the best false advertising in Istanbul. While the location of the hotel is located near two of the main religious sites of tourism, that is the only benefit to choosing this hotel for your stay in Turkey. In the area, Sultanahmet, there are plenty of hotels for the same price and exceedingly better quality. The employees, a couple in particular, were very disrespectful, unaccommodating, and inhospitable. The unwelcoming demeanor of the hotel staff is enough to make one uncomfortable, but that is really only the beginning. In an almost completely vacant hotel of 2 floors of rooms, we were placed in the back corner of the hotel, which had one small window looking out into a sketchy, dark closed-off area, where feral cats scrounge for food and cry all night. The hotel website falsely advertises space and regal design, while purporting excellent service and care for their guests. Additionally, we were not supplied sheets for the bed, which became uncomfortably hot without working air-conditioning. The safe was locked when we arrived and nobody opened it for us. Later, we realized that the cats bring fish and bones to that closed space, which consequently fills the rooms with a pungent odor of fish that has already seeped into the walls – impossible to mask. The shower is a very tight space and the hotel supplies awful, sweet-smelling toiletries suitable for a pre-teen girl, maybe. Also, there were several occasions were we did not have hot water for some time. The WIFI Internet is free and accessible to all guests, but it doesn’t work. I requested help with the internet and one gentleman reset the modem – hoping that would work – but it didn’t. The next time I inquired about the internet connection, the usual receptionist/concierge just starred at me, red-eyed, and unhelpful. I explained that it had been a recurring issue, among others, and he shrugged me off, rolled his eyes, and said, “What do you want me to do about it?” Needless to say, working with him was not going to yield any sort of satisfying result. The next day, the third of eight nights, we switched rooms to escape the foul rank of dirty cats and fish stuck in the walls of the back corner room. We knew that we could switch because the cleaning service leave all the vacant rooms open to air them out. So we picked on that seemed nice and switched for a night. On the positive side, there were not feral cats in the night, there were bed sheets, and there was a working safe. However, the showerhead in this room was broken and “unfixable.” The Internet issue was never resolved and we ended up doing our work in cafés in another area of the city. After the third night, we decided to switch hotels – thankfully, we purchased a cancellation contingency from the travel website, where we booked the hotel. When we decided to leave, he insisted that we pay for the following night as well and threw a fit about it. We told him all the problems once again and he just shrugged it off again, red-eyed, and continued to insist that we had to pay the full price of the booking. We finally got him to accept the cancellation protection, saving ourselves wasted money on subsequent nights. After we told him that we were not satisfied with the hotel and that they were deceiving, he had the audacity to hand us back the key and said, “Your check out is tomorrow at 2pm.” We left the key on the counter and walked out with our bags.
