Area description
The Byzantium Hotel is located on Akbiyik Street within walking distance of such historical and major city sights as St. Sophia (Aya Sophia/Hagia Sophia), The Blue (Sultanhamet) Mosque, The Cistern Basilica (Yerebatan Cistern), Topkapi Palace, The Grand Bazaar (Kapalicarsi) and Misir Carsisi. Once described as the Way of Kings, Akbiyik Street is an ancient road used by empirical leaders as a route into the Old City and its palaces, divides the historical peninsula down the middle and leads guests directly from the hotel into the heart of Sultanahmet. Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies between two continents. The old town provides a unique setting, as it is on the European side, with only a few hundred metres to the coast overlooking Asia Minor.

Find somewhere else

The staff seemed nice, but they're overcharging guests who don't know what to expect in the city. Do NOT let them arrange a ride to the airport, you'll pay almost twice what a cab will cost. The room was so small that it was difficult to open my small bag, my back-pack, and still have a surface available to set anything down. The air-conditioning is a joke. It wasn't that warm when I was there and it was still hot and stuffy in the room. This place is not worth the money paid. A hostel would be more comfortable. Skip this one--there's too many hotels in the area to waste your money on this one.

Convient, comfortable and quiet

We enjoyed our 4 nights at the Byzantium. The breakfast buffet had a good variety of choices including some excellent scrambled eggs. The room was small but comfortable and very quiet. It was a short walk to the Blue Mosque and other attractions. They had both wifi and a computer which we could use.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Lots of restaurants on the same street. We liked the Italian one directly across the street.
