19th-century school building gets top grades as a small hotel

The Ottoman Hotel Imperial, originally built as an Ottoman school and hospital in the mid-19th century, today is an elegant and welcoming vision for travelers. The building was converted to a hotel in 2005. From the hotel's elevated location above the Old City guests can take in views of some of the world's most beautiful sights, including the Marmara Sea. The Ottoman Hotel Imperial sits amidst many of the Old City's most popular attractions, including the Hagia Sophia Museum, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque.

Highlights

  • Historic building was an Ottoman school and hospital
  • Elevated location in the Old City affords stunning views
  • Steps from incredible historic sites, including Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
  • Fine restaurant serves traditional Turkish cuisine

Rooms

Rooms feature traditional Ottoman décor and all the comforts a modern traveler requires. High-speed and wireless Internet access is available (fees may apply). The desks are small and better suited to a casual letter or a computer space than a place for business travelers to spread out. Guests receive a complimentary welcome drink.

Features

The Ottoman Hotel Imperial combines contemporary and traditional décor in an elegant interior with a focus on guest comfort.

The hotel has two restaurants. The menu at the fine Matbah Restaurant focuses on traditional Turkish cuisine. Sadrazam Restaurant's buffet features dishes from Turkey and other global influences. The hotel's Saltanat Bar offers wine, beer, and seasonal specialty cocktails.

Guests can relax in the hotel's garden or on the terrace.

Perfect stay

Staying at the ottoman imperial hotel is such a pleasure, one can not wait to repeat it. So clause to Aya Sophia and the blue mosque and all that Sultan Ahmet offers.. It is a five star experience, without the price tag of such hotels.. Highly recommended, from a traveler who knows the value of excellent hotels like the Ottoman Imperial Hotel in Istanbul..

Ottoman Empire Imperial

I'm so glad that I found the Ottoman, one of the most pleasant smaller hotels I've stayed at. The standard single is pretty tight and bit claustrophobic, but mostly because of the big comfortable bed. I had a close-up view of the Hajia Sofia. The restaurant, Matbah, serves food fit for a sultan -- literally!! The dishes are prepared from recipes of the 15th and 16th Century Ottoman Empire. Everything at the Ottoman was just about perfect.

Sarnic Restaurant. A spectacular setting in an ancient vaulted cistern. The food is quite good, but doesn't measure up to the elegant ambience and service.

Ideal Istanbul location.

You could not get a better location in Instanbul for sight seeing. However there is a price to pay, make sure you get a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the back of the Sophia mosque as the street side rooms are noisy (trams) and rooms 604/6/8/10 have views of walls 6 foot from the winnow. Also some rooms are tiny.

Great once we got there!

For some reason the driver of our cab from the cruise terminal had great difficulty finding the hotel. However, once we arrived, we were upgraded to the best room in the house. Although the room wasn't yet ready (we were early) we were invited to take breakfast (at no cost) while we waited. The room itself was most comfortable. We were leaving early the next day for the airport and although breakfast didn't officially start until 6.30 am, we were able to get a very good continental breakfast at 6 am. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful.

Very Good Location

A very good location but the taxi found it hard to find. The first two rooms we were offered were not up to standard, one promised to be very noisy and the other was very dark.

Istanbul vacation

The hotel is literally across the street from the Hagia Sophia. Wonderful staff, and very nice hotel. The hotel is clean and well maintained. The breakfast buffet was one of the best on our trip (simple, but most continental buffets are). We would stay here again without hesitation.

Great location, friendly staff

Stayed for 7 nights. This Hotel is all about location. It is in a quiet street( at least if your room is in the main building) in the middle of Istanbul's historical area. the hotel faces Hagia Sofia, and its a short walk from the Blue Mosque and the Cistern.Rooms are nicely decorated, and Staff is very friendly. Matbah restaurant is superb! ( try Zire-ba, a lamb casserole with honey and almonds). After walking extensively in the city, i believe the hotel is the best located. Will be back! RM

Would definitely stay here again!

I did a lot of searching before deciding to stay at this hotel. It was a great pick! The hotel is literally right behind the Hagia Sophia and steps away from just about all the major attractions. The staff were remarkable. They were always there to help with questions (and believe me I think I was a frequent caller to their front desk). The breakfast was fine - quite a selection of breads, olives, cereal, cheeses, etc. We stayed a total of three nights and were just delighted. The room was on the smaller side, but worked fine for us. Overall, very happy with our stay!

Entertainment tip: Long walk from hotel

This might be a little longer of a walk since you have to cross over the bridge, but I highly recommend taking a ferry on the Bosphorous (instead of a dinner cruise). Board the one right before sunset and you will have the most amazing views of Istanbul. Plus, it's pretty cheap. You will just ride it over to the other side and back.
