19th-century school building gets top grades as a small hotel

The Ottoman Hotel Imperial, originally built as an Ottoman school and hospital in the mid-19th century, today is an elegant and welcoming vision for travelers. The building was converted to a hotel in 2005. From the hotel's elevated location above the Old City guests can take in views of some of the world's most beautiful sights, including the Marmara Sea. The Ottoman Hotel Imperial sits amidst many of the Old City's most popular attractions, including the Hagia Sophia Museum, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque.

Highlights

  • Historic building was an Ottoman school and hospital
  • Elevated location in the Old City affords stunning views
  • Steps from incredible historic sites, including Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
  • Fine restaurant serves traditional Turkish cuisine

Rooms

Rooms feature traditional Ottoman décor and all the comforts a modern traveler requires. High-speed and wireless Internet access is available (fees may apply). The desks are small and better suited to a casual letter or a computer space than a place for business travelers to spread out. Guests receive a complimentary welcome drink.

Features

The Ottoman Hotel Imperial combines contemporary and traditional décor in an elegant interior with a focus on guest comfort.

The hotel has two restaurants. The menu at the fine Matbah Restaurant focuses on traditional Turkish cuisine. Sadrazam Restaurant's buffet features dishes from Turkey and other global influences. The hotel's Saltanat Bar offers wine, beer, and seasonal specialty cocktails.

Guests can relax in the hotel's garden or on the terrace.

A week in Istanbul

We arrived at this hotel and were met by friendly and helpful staff. The location was the very best possible right across the street from the Hague Sophia. The room overlooked the a lively street with music at night. The resturant was superb but on the pricey side. Our hotel hosts were always ready to help.

At the center of the Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Hotel Imperial is slightly hard to get to by car as it is one a steeply sloping restricted access street. But once there you do not need a car again it is steps away from the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, just across the street from the Basilica Cistern, around the corner from the Imperial palace and the excellent archeology museum and a brisk 10 minutes to the Great Bazaar. In between are all the shops and restaurants one could desire. The hotel itself is clean and comfortable. My wife had broken a toe a few weeks before our trip. Our room was down four flights of stairs which we figured to find a way to manage. However, the hotel management saw my wife's condition and offered us a room on the main floor. The room itself was excellent, warm, with a comfortable bed, good shower, well stocked mini-bar and complementary Turkish towel bath robes. Breakfast was included with the room it featured both European style cold cuts and cheese along with a variety of hot dishes and the Turkish staple of boiled eggs. Good coffee from one of those mysterious machines that should make very bad coffee but don't. The only draw back is that the hotel is surrounded by an army of rug salesmen who all want to get to know you and invite you back to their family's shop for the deal of lifetime. But is is a small price to pay for a great location and very attentive staff. One our first night the staff brought in a birthday cake for me as they had copied my passport and discovered that it was in fact my 59th birthday.

Beautiful hotel, perfect location

You will not find a hotel in a better location than the Ottoman Hotel Imperial. It is literally across the street from Aya Sophia and within a 5 minute walk from the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Basilica Cistern. The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are both just a 10-15 minute walk, or 2 tram stops, away as well. The hotel itself is very clean and beautifully decorated. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because they messed up our reservation the first night. I had reserved a room with 2 twin beds and a city or Aya Sophia view and they had none left and tried to put us in a single bed room on the bottom floor with no view. We had to stay in the single room the first night, but they gave us the correct room the next day and left a fruit basket in apology. The free breakfast at the hotel is not a continental breakfast, it is actually a full breakfast buffet and all the food was delicious! The hotel staff was very helpful in providing directions for anywhere we wanted to go and were always friendly. This is the place to stay if you want to explore the historic sights of Istanbul.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are many great places to eat within 2 blocks of the hotel. Don't eat at the hotel's restaurant, Matbah, it is very expensive and the food is just average. I recommend the Green Corner restaurant just down the street from the hotel.

Directions

great location but hard to find;directions below. very good restaurant attached. bathroom small. comfy bed. friendly staff. directions; On a cobblestone street, more like an alley that runs directly behind the HAGiA SOPHIA and is closed to cars during the day. Go to the intersection of Divan Yolu CD and Yerebatan CD, then look for Caferiye SK branching off of Yerebatan. The hotel is around 50 feet down and if you take their phone number their porter can meet you at your taxi.

Relax, you are at the 'Right Place'!

My friend from Turkey had suggested me to stay in the Old Sultanahmet area as the historical sites such as the Hagia Sofia (Ayasofya), Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar etc. are in proximity or in the area itself. Location: This hotel is right next to Hagia Sofia and in between 2 metro stations Sultanahmet and Gulhane. One can cover Topkapi, Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Archaelogical Museum, and Grand Bazaar on foot. I was there for 3 nights, and it made perfect sense for me to be at this location. Also, I saved money by taking metro and avoiding taxi because Taksim, Dombalbahce, Galata Bridge and Emimonu (Bosphorous Tour Site of Turkish Govt. Ferry) were accessible both by metro or were a short walk from the hotel. Comfort: The bed and ambience of the room are an essential part of my stay as I am mostly on foot exploring the place, and need a nice cosy room to crash and wake up fresh. The bed was comfortable, the bathrooms were clean and the room service was exemplary. Staff: The staffs were polite and welcoming. Delara gave me a good idea of what to cover and how to reach those places. I had a late evening flight, and the front desk manager allowed me a late checkout without any issues and most importantly without any extra charge. Cons: The Wi-Fi had issues for all the three days. But mostly I was out so it wasn't a pain. But one can expect better service in terms of getting it fixed at the earliest notice and not let the issue persist for 3 days. I would strongly recommend this hotel for its location, comfort, service and smiling staff members.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Get a metrocard as soon as you land in Istanbul. The frequency of the metro is good and the connectivity is also good. The metro card is valid in the buses too. Metro + Short Walks = Saves Money and Time. Istanbul Taksis are famous for taking longer routes, charging fares above normal, and the traffic jams will add to your fare while waiting in taksi.

Ideal for Exploration

The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating and were helpful in providing information on city transit. Situated in a central spot close to the tram and bus lines and within easy walking distance of so many museum and architectural sites made this a very good choice of hotel.
