Outsatnding Service

The Orient Express Hotel Istanbul raises the bar for other hotels wishing to match quality customer service. The top quality ... service stated when we were unable to obtain a cab because the Turkey Cab drivers were all after the higher fairs for customers disembarking the cruise headed to the airport. So we contacted the hotel and they arrange for a cab to pick us up and provided the number. Well a cab with a very similar number stopped by and confirmed he was sent by Orient Express. Turns out he wasn't and request $58 US in lieu of the $10-$15 for the little over a mile trip. We call Orient Express and they ask us to get the Bellboy when we arrived. The cab driver must have learned what was up and proceeded to drop us off at the corner. I went to get the bellboy as the wife guarded the bags and held off payment. The bell boy argued and took the cabs number. We still ended up paying 30 Lira. But this was much better than $58 US. They were going to file a complaint but since we were only going to be in town one night it would do no good since we would not be available once the police contacted them for our statement. None the less this service was greatly appreciated. We had booked a single room for 3 people and they offered us two rooms because of all of our luggage and I believe to compensate us for our unpleasant start in their country. It turns out the majority of the people we met during our visit were very friendly, so don't let a crooked cab driver give you a bad impression of Turkey. The rooms were small but by European standard above average and the room and entire facility were very clean and well maintained. We did not have time to try the pool, restaurant, fitness center, or the complimentary breakfast. But all of the facilities and other amenities that we utilized were trouble free. In summary it's a well located hotel that is clean and well maintained and the entire staff provides top quality customer service. The Orient Express Hotel Istanbul is highly recommended by my wife, father-in-law, and myself.

Great hotel

Wonderful staff, outstanding location in Istanbul's historic old city only one block from tram station and only 5-10 minute ... walk to all major sites, terrific buffet breakfast, very reasonable price for all this. Check-in was at coffee table with hotel concierge giving city and travel tips and hot apple spice tea. Room size ok but really should be larger.

Wonderful Istanbul Hotel

Spent a week in Istanbul and loved this hotel, the friendly staff that went out of its way to accommodate us, lovely roof ... restaurant with breathtaking view, excellent breakfast buffet, an air conditioned elegant lobby, a useful small business office to use computer, air conditioned quiet room, etc. The location was ideal on the tram line and in heart of Sultanhamet.

Recommend you get a good current guide book...we used Rick Steves Istanbul book which prioritized places to see and things to do...with very helpful hints on how to negotiate your way around bazaars, shops, cultural sensitivities, etc.

Medium walk, really. Rumeli Cafe and Restaurant. Recommened to us by friends who had visited before us, and we agreed. We went back on the last evening, because it was the best place we ate at.

Perfect Place if you like local
Lovestraveling1955 May 29, 2009
For travelers who do not like chains and want to be in a comfortable, friendly, locally run hotel, Oriental Express is ... perfect. Yes, the rooms are European-style small, but they are very clean. And the beds are super comfortable, not saggy, or old. Yes, the street noise can sometimes be heard in your room, but not excessively so-- and hearing a prayer call every once in a while - isn't that what you're in Istanbul for: to experience the local culture? Hotel staff is, without exception wonderful - personable, friendly and accommodating. The breakfast (included in price) is amazing - I missed it when I came home - it's a risk-free way to sample local fare- there is something for everyone. Location? Couldn't be better, really. We walked everywhere, including to the docks where we went on the 6 hour boat ride up the Bospheros Straight to the Black Sea (highly recommended- not expensive) and to the mosques, the palace, the university, spice and grand bazars etc. If you want to travel to the new part of the city, the hotel is near a tram stop. There is a grocery store just a few storefronts down, and the hotel rooms come equipped with a small fridge -- very convenient. This is not a flashy, luxurious, pamper-you-with-a-massage Americanized hotel. It is a comfortable, clean, extremely friendly modest place. You can stay here without feeling like you cheated by staying in a chain hotel and still have your basic comforts more than met. The hotel also has a computer with Internet available in a room off the reception area for guests who want to check their e-mail every once in a while, but don't want to lug their computers along - once again, perfect for the traveler who doesn't want to completely loose touch but wants to feel like s/he is on vacation. We saw families with children and they appeared to be happy as well. There is a smallish pool that looked well kept and would be nice to come "home" to after a day of culture or shopping if you bring kids. I definitely recommend the Oriental Express.
