Stunning hotel but too far from Bodrum center and hugely overpriced hotel food and drinks.

The hotel setting is amazing. Beautiful views for morning breakfast and the staff were extremely kind and offered impeccable service. Thats the good bit... Now here's the bad bit... You're a good 20km from Bodrum center and there are NO shops or restaurants within walking distance. Hence, you HAVE to buy food and drinks from the hotel menu or you're faced with a long hike into town via the public bus or an expensive taxi. Taxis in Bodrum are not cheap to say the least. It will cost you around £20 each way to get to town and back. The hotel knows this and therefore price their menus accordingly: 1 chicken salad and a small bottle of water = £20!!! The salad was nothing but a huge bowl of lettuce, a bit of dressing and half a chicken fillet. The most basic salad I've ever eaten for an extraordinary amount of money. Times that by 2 people... add a few evening drinks at £10 each and you've already spent a small fortune on basic necessities. The hotel restaurants are lovely... but again... hugely overpriced. If you want a beautiful hotel (probably the best in the Bodrum Peninsula) and can afford being ripped off then it's for you. Personally, I'd prefer to stay at the Marina Vista or somewhere right in town that has a high class, boutique style but is right in the heart of everything so you have much more of a choice of where to eat, shop and hang out (last night I checked and it was £100 a night but was fully booked for this weeks festival). When you consider the walk in room rate at the Kempinski is £200 a night and you'll need to spend at least £100 a day on food for 2 people you can soon end up spending a lot of money, unnecessarily. Bodrum center is beautiful and has some lovely restaurants and beach bars that are absolutely worth a few visits at least. You're not spoilt for choice for high calibre hotels in the center though... I spent a fair bit of time looking for a place for a friend who was joining us later. I ended up staying an extra week, checked out of the Kempinski and rented a lovely apartment in between Bodrum and Gumbet. It was brand new and only £40 a night (low season (October - Royal Palm Residence). I then rented a scooter for £10 a day and had decent enough transport to pop to the shops, gym and Bodrum center to visit friends etc. Also watch out for the 'all inclusive' hotels (diamond, World of Wonders etc)... there are a lot of, shall we say, 'characters' that enjoy sitting at the bar, being very loud, playing cards and getting as drunk as possible for free. Overall, the Kempinski is a stunning hotel and offers amazing service but unfortunately, and disappointingly, hugely overpriced and too far from Bodrum.

Get a car, eat a big brunch, have a ball !

We went the first week in April and the place was virtually deserted, however the main attractions (superb spa and pool) were open and we had an absolutely blissful rest. Vis the review title, the hotel is pretty remote so hire a car (we paid approx £100.00 a week for a little fiat) to get about, breakfast is served until noon and has a great selection so missing lunch is`nt really a problem at all and take full advantage of the spa and pool .

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Go to the Ciftlik garden restaurant for dinner, out of the hotel, down the hill, along the coast, through the village and it`ll be on your left, great food, lovely family that own it and if you spend a few bob you`ll get a lift back to the hotel. Example, a bottle of perfectly drinkable house wine costs just 70p more than a small bottle of beer does in the hotel, and the food is not only Turkish and tasty but costs peanuts, enjoy !
