Stayed a week, family with two children, had a deluxe Fale which was lovely. Staff all great and really friendly and helpful, room and bathroom spacious and well stocked. A true deserted island paradise and feel. Casual, shoeless peace.
superb, especially freshly caught fish, but is fairly pricey. We often shared meals and found this sufficient. Breakfast is very child friendly (fruit, lovely pancakes, toast) but lunch and dinner choices not always so if you have fussy eaters or non-fish eaters. But you can always ask for fish & chips/fries/toasted sandwich etc. and the chef was really willing and helpful on this. Might be an idea to take snacks with you if you have space. There's a fridge in the room which is helpful.
There's not a lot to do (part of the attraction) but kayaking around the island is fun, swimming is good in calm, clear waters. We didn't manage the mainland or island hopping trips, which would be interesting, but snorkelling on the reef was great and whale watching/swimming (the main reason we went to Tonga) was absolutely AMAZING. Just 6 of us on the boat, many whales and we swam with them several times. It was quite expensive but worth every penny. Unforgettable.
The weather was not as good as we had hoped, mainly fairly overcast, some rain and very humid which sometimes made sleeping a bit tricky.
Fantastic bird life and the dawn chorus is incredible, not to be missed.
One side of the island seemed to be in constant wind, the other side is calm and peaceful, much preferable.
There is wifi but not in the Fales and it can be very slow.
We were on a round the world trip and our children still talk about Tonga as the best part of the whole experience. None of us will forget it.
