The Power Beach Resort is the worse place I have EVER stayed at for the money spent. In fact, the name is completely misleading on two out of three counts. 1) the place does not have a beach especially during high tide and 2) it is clearly NOT a
resort. There are structural aspects of this place that cannot be fixed anytime soon so I would STRONGLY suggest that you avoid this place at all cost (no pun intended) EVER.
FYI, I am in good shape and have traveled as a backpacker in 3rd world countries and so I know how to rough it, but in this case everyone staying here got completely ripped off.
Here are things that cannot be fixed quickly.
> Horribly unsafe steps. The upper cottages can be only gotten to by climbing over 100 worst-made cement steps. Every one was shaped differently, with treads widths ranging from 4 to 16 inches (10-40 cm) and step heights ranging from a few inches to over a foot (10- 35 cm) (I am NOT kidding), often with trends sloping downwards. This made it a safety hazard especially after a rain since they never sweep the steps so they are littered with leaves. The steps went past an area void of vegetation and was littered with garbage.
> There is literally no beach during high tide. The place is called a beach, but this is an utter lie.
> The uphill huts were like an one-star third-world country inn. Almost nothing in the interior, bathrooms that were concrete boxes with no dividers between the toilet or shower. A steep wooden staircase with step heights of over a foot (35 cm) that was more like a ladder.
> Next store is a garbage dump and a shanty town for the workers.
Things that could be changed if they fired everyone and changed managers.
> The service and food were usually very bad. Except for the breakfast, which was okay and was included, we always ate at the resort called Relax Resort next door. BTW The Relax Resort was nicely run and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves there. I would suggest staying there.
> They ripped us off horribly by charging $80 for EACH person for the New Years eve party. The manager of the place limited drinks to a “punch” that consisted of green juice and beer that was then watered down with lots of water!!!! It tasted bad and had no “punch”.
> The sewage lines broke so the huts lower on the hill stank like raw sewage for days.
> Mosquitoes in many rooms (heard from others), with the staff doing nothing about it
> the beach has lots of rocks so it is often VERY difficult to get in and out of the water without hurting yourself.
Positives (yes there)
> While the beach is non existent and shallow waters rocky, an incredible underwater scene lies in a couple of feet of water. In fact, of all the places we snorkeled while on Phi Phi, this was the best by far. Lots of fish, live corals, etc. all in 1- 2 meters of water.
> It is away from the town. The town is like a drunken Daytona Beach. It is an hour walk from town. The walk to town is magical with spectacular views.
> With only two modest sized resorts spanning this isolated cove, if the resort had been done right, it could have been a magical place to get away.
> Great sunrises!!
IN SUM: NEVER STAY AT POWER BEACH RESORT.
SUGGESTION: stay at the Relax Resort just next store.
