Overview

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is an 84-room hotel, spa and restaurant located in the centre of Chiang Mai on the banks of the Mae Ping River. The site of the hotel is the compound of the former British Consulate in Chiang Mai, within which the main Consulate building, dating from the 1920's, has been retained and integrated within the hotel design. The design intention of the scheme was to combine a city location with the atmosphere of a resort hotel, together with the integration of the existing colonial house, site and hotel using a contemporary interpretation of traditional Thai materials. The lobby of the hotel is centered on the existing house, set in a landscaped court with a large reflection pool separating the new and old buildings. The swimming pool, spa and restaurant are located at the front of the site facing the Mae Ping River and are reached from a ground level covered walkway that extends from the hotel lobby to a riverside pier. The locations of each of the buildings form a series of large internal courtyards within the site, each of different character. The hotel building consists of guest rooms on four storeys in an "L" shape formed around a large courtyard and facing towards the river. The external faade of the rooms, facing the courtyard are lined with teak panels in a pattern suggestive of the style found in traditional Thai construction. The large overhanging roof of the hotel acts as weather protection for the guest room balconies and directs rainwater into the courtyard area. The faade facing the street consists of a dense vertical timber screen allowing for both privacy and weather protection. The screen and corridor form a buffer zone from the outside environment and creates privacy for the guest rooms, which face towards the landscaped courtyard areas and towards the river. The entrance to each room is through an external private courtyard, which allows light into the guest rooms and represents Asian traditional life style.Within the guest rooms dark timber floors, hand-made red wall tiles, terrazzo plinths together with teak and rattan furniture give a sense of traditional Thai design through the use of local materials in a contemporary form. Natural light is brought into the bathrooms through translucent glass that faces onto the private courtyard. In each bathroom a sliding screen in front of the freestanding bath can be opened-up to the room. All rooms have a large balcony facing towards the garden and river.Paper and metal light fittings in the rooms and public areas are designed to reflect the traditional paper umbrellas and lanterns found in the North of Thailand around Chiang Mai. Other amenities provided by the property are barbecue area, Children's facilities, Dry cleaning, Lobby and Reception.

ONE OF THE BEST 5 STARS HOTELS WORLDWIDE!

Would recommend Sun, Sep 25, 2011
This is just a fantastic 5 stars hotel, one of the best I have stayed at. This beautiful hotel is the kind of hotel where you want to stay for 7 days and never come out so that u can enjoy it as much as you can. I highly recommend anyone to stay there. Also the hotel location is great.

Nightlife hint

If you want to party at night, Chiang Mai is not the place you want to go in Thailand. There is limited nightlife and very few night spots. However if you want to relax and get away from it all, the Chedi is where you want to be in Chiang Mai

Chedi Club room, absolutly brilliant

Would recommend Thu, May 5, 2011
This was our third and our daughter's 12th trip to Thailand. After 4 nights at Pathumwan Princess in Bangkok it was on to Chiang Mai via train (an adventure we would thoroughly recommended. We then enjoyed 4 nights at the fabulous Chedi. We opted for a Club room for three adults. This room includes pick-up/return to station or airport, personal check-in at the upstairs club lounge. Then there is all day access to club lounge for complimentary coffee, tea and biscuits, cocktails and canapes from 6 - 8 pm every evening. A mini bar, daily fruit bowl and laundry of 7 items per day is included in the tariff. amenities include a great pool and restaurant. Two minutes from the to night bazaar, a must do! (All help make the club room very good value). The staff are beyond brilliant and were always willing to assist with grace, patience and kindness. Manager [...] a very friendly Frenchman with the biggest smile and obviously loved by all staff. The great skills of Aussie Chef [...] all helped to make our stay memorable, and we left feeling we had left some of our heart in Chiang Mai. We will be back!!

Dining

Unlike a lot of Hotels the Chedi restaurant is as good as you will find anywhere, with stunning Indian, Thai and International fare. So don't be afraid to have at least one meal in house

Great Value

Would recommend Sun, Apr 24, 2011
Chedi Chiang Mai is a great value. We stayed 3 nights during the first week in April and loved it. It was our favorite hotel that we stayed at in Thailand (In Bangkok we were at Lebua & Ritz Carlton's Phulay Bay in Krabi) Looking back we wish we spent more time here. The rooms are very nice, the breakfast is the best we had during our 2 wks vacation and the grounds of the hotel are suitable for the princess (she was actually checking in when we left). The only problem we had was during our first night it rained and the frogs were mating (i know this sounds insane BUT it was sooo loud and my husband and I thought we were going crazy when we were woken at 1:00AM and couldnt go back to sleep for 3 hours). We were in a room by the river and this is apparently a problem during rainy season, but the next morning the hotel manager moved our room and upgraded us to a Chedi Club Suite. If you can stay in the the upgraded room, I highly recommend it. Much nicer rooms. Definitely request a non frog room if you are travelling during rain season & bring earplugs just in case! Other than the above problem (and mosquitoes are also a problem there so make sure to open and close door quickly) we had a great stay. If money is not an issue check out Mandarin Oriental CM. We had dinner there and wished we had spent a few nights there as well.

Attractions

Our Tour Guide + driver [...] rinlong55[@] made our stay in CM amazing. He was so knowledgable & drove us everywhere, from the airport to all different sites, hiking, bamboo rafting and so much more. Also a must is Patara Elephant Farm!

Great escape!

Would recommend Sat, Nov 20, 2010
The Chedi was an eden in the middle of the city! The hotel and grounds are stunning and peaceful. From the moment you arrive you are well taken care of by all of the staff. Many areas to lounge around, relax and enjoy the setting. Modern meets east is the best way to describe this hotel. Only minutes from night market too! Hotel serves great food throughout the day to suit all tastes. Spa was blissful end of story. Every opportunity to do 'touristy' things, but somehow it did not seem right to patronize places that have tigers you can pet, or monkeys on tricycles. So instead we simply enjoyed the hotel. My only down comment (which is not hotels doing) is the incessant fireworks that seemed to go from dusk until dawn every night..... Highly recommended for families, couples and solo travellers who want a 5 star experience!

Dining

The night market is steps from the hotel and serves fantastic seafood! Bring the cards, have some beer and enjoy the chaos of the market!
