Dining
- Thiptara
- Shipped from the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya, the steep-roofed open-sided salas were reassembled as the riverside Thai restaurant, Thiptara. Set on teak decking around a banyan tree, each holds just two tables, ensuring intimate dining by candlelight, or sit at open river bank tables for a sublime view. Forget you're in the middle of Bangkok, and discover why so many guests rate this the city's best for home-style Thai cooking.
- River Cafe and Terrace
- Close your eyes and let your senses define the experience of dining al fresco on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, with the long tail boats zipping past. Choose between international dinner buffets or all-day la carte meals in cool air-conditioned relaxed comfort, or sit outside and enjoy the night skyline by candlelight. Start with drinks at the open air River Bar and allow yourself to be beguiled by Bangkok.
- Lobby
- The lobby serves a wide selection of light meals and the traditional Peninsula afternoon tea, accompanied by live classical music.
- The Pool Bar
- Ideal for relaxing and unwinding.
- Mei Jiang
- Cantonese food lovers will be charmed by Mei Jiang's interior, with light streaming through long latticed windows opening onto an ornamental pool, reflecting the Chinese and Thai affinity with water. Expect the best from the culinary team who specialise in dim sum and abalone dishes. Five lavishly and richly decorated private dining rooms can be converted into one for larger gatherings.

Great value
The Peninsula in Bangkok is everything you'd expect from a hotel of this category: rooms are well-appointed, service impeccable, location unbeatable. We've stayed here twice in the past six weeks, and both times it was consistently good. At half the price what you'd pay at the Mandarin Oriental just across the river for very similar quality and service, the Peninsula offers great value. If the Peninsula management are reading this, there are only three areas where I find room for improvement: 1) Food (especially a-la-carte) is sub-standard. The morning buffet is lovely. But it all goes downhill from there. I've been disappointed at the Thai restaurant, the riverside terrace and pool-side snacks. 2) The boat service to River City is extremely annoying. Customers' needs - not a fixed schedule - should drive it. And customers should not have to "book" it on top of that. The Oriental's boat service to RC is available at any time upon request. Peninsula's should be the same. 3) Between our first stay in mid-December and early February, pool-side service declined noticeably. While the number of guests by the pool increased substantially, there were fewer staff to take care of them. Service was erratic at best. Other than these three specific issues, everything else at Peninsula was flawless.

Dining at Peninsula is poor. Hop across the river to the Oriental for the best dining in town.

A quite retreat in Bangkok
We stayed at the Peninsula in Bangkok for one night in the Grande Deluxe w/ Balcony room. Service at this hotel is impeccable. Can't say enough good things about the staff. The facilities are very grand including the rooms but the technology in the rooms (TVs, thermostats, etc.) is a bit dated. The lack of an iron in the room was a bit odd though they delivered one expeditiously (with a tip). The hotel was a quiet and safe haven in an otherwise noisy and chaotic city.
