The hotel also has outdoor swimming pool. This is a good choice for guests who want to stay near the Grand Palace and Khao San Road, as well as government and UN offices. (09/06SW) This is a traditional yellow-coloured low-rise building, in keeping with the surrounding period architecture. This hotel is located on Rajdamnoen Avenue, directly opposite Sanam Luang and within walking distance of various city attractions, such as the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha, etc.

Location is perfect

This is an older hotel in a great location. Unfortunately the area around the hotel has degraded over the past 10 years. It was once considered a luxury hotel and there are still touches of luxury that remain, but it needs some updates. However, it is a good price, near the palace, museum and not far from the river (boat rides). It is safe (security at the door), clean, comfortable beds, good breakfast included in the price and the staff are great. Recommended for the adventuresome travelers, but not for the 4-5* hotel types. Ask for a room in the back away from the street.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the long tail boat ride up and down the river instead of the tourist boat rides. These boats are a major form of transportation for the locals and are inexpensive and a fun way to get into the culture.

Faded dowager needs more than fresh paint

The Royal Hotel is perfectly located for tourists within walking distance of the Royal Palace complex, Wat Po Monastery, National Theatre and Museum, Chat Phao river piers. This once-elegant hotel needs a rich sugar-daddy to renovate and update - the lobby once was elegant, with marble floors and carved wood reception desk, but the formal lounge area is furnished with kithenette- style formica-topped tables and aluminum chairs. The rooms have nice marble baths, but the furniture is plywood, and the doors and drawers stick. There is a swimming pool, with no shred of greenery to soften its setting Service was friendly and helpful, especially with suggestions on where to go taking into account the flood situation. For a one - night stay to hit the tourist high spots, this was ok; for anything longer,I'd look elsewhare.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

For an elegant and romantic white-tablecloth dinner on the river, take a tuk-tuk to the Pha Maharach pier, and then the free boat across the river to the Suphattra River House. You can eat either inside or on the outside patio. Food is traditional Thai, service is polished and attentive, and the scenery includes the Royal Palace lit at night as well as the drama and detail of the passing river life.
