Pipeline burst and flooded corridor, extra costs for nearly everything

We checked in to this hotel around midnight having booked and pre-paid already. The location was in an accessible area and the pictures had seemed okay online, so we went ahead and booked it for our week-long stay. First, our room with 2 single beds was decently sized but highly out-of-date. The carpet was stained, the furniture was old and bulky, and the bathroom was un-updated. After an hour of turning on the thermostat's heat, it was still cold so we called downstairs and found out that the hotel didn't turn on the central heating system in order to save costs! Fine, but heat isn't a typical amenity, it's a necessity! They appeased us by bring a oscillating heat-dish which wasn't large enough to readily heat the room. Whatever. Next, we tried to check our email and asked the front desk for an ethernet cable (no wifi here) and a converter for our laptop. We plugged in to find that the hotel charges 300NT($10USD) each day for internet. Not wanting to pay for something that is usually free in hotels, we opted not to pay for it and inquired about the hotel's business center. The woman at the front desk said using the business center required additional fees. Bummer to say the least. When we got ready for bed, we started hearing the sound of water pouring. I thought it was someone on the floor above showering, but then realized we were on the top floor already. We peeked out into the corridor to find that the ceiling was leaking and literally dumping water onto the carpeted hallway right outside our door. It seems like a pipeline had broke and made its way into the hotel. We alerted downstairs and asked for us to change rooms because the sound of flooding water in the corridor undoubtedly keep us up. The front desk agent complied and prepared a key for us to move to the room next door. Um, that doesn't solve the problem at all--we would still use the same flooded corridor and still hear the incessant dumping of water from the ceiling. Finally understanding, the front desk agent changed our room to a lower floor. At this point, it was 3AM, we were terribly frigid from sitting in their unheated room, agitated from having to unpack and repack to change rooms, annoyed at the lack of internet and heat, and exhausted all around. To compensate us, the night-time maintenance manager gave us 6 days worth of breakfast vouchers, 1 day shy of our full stay. The rest of our stay was luckily not as eventful as our first evening. We both caught wicked colds from the cold air that circulated in the room after checking in. The housekeeping servicewoman was very nice and gave us 4 bottles of water instead of the usual 2 to ease our sore throats. In general the housekeeping was very adept at tidying and highly timely. The breakfast was fine, but I definitely wouldn't pay 480NT ($16USD) for it. It consisted of juice, tea, coffee, omelette station, toast, bread, soy milk, variety of eggs, bacon, french toast, congee, cold cuts, fruit, etc. It had plenty of variety, but the fruit platters were sometimes SPOILED. On our penultimate day, the Honeydew melon platter had an obviously spoiled/expired taste. We alerted the restaurant staff but saw them serving the same platter at lunch later day that. Finally our stay came to an end and we headed downstairs to check out/return the keys. Of the two front desk clerks who were free, neither of them looked up from their computer monitors to acknowledge us. We had to ask if they could help us. Neither of them made eye contact with us, no one uttered a "good morning" or a "hope you enjoyed your stay with us." Clearly, they did not have any customer service training. As an addendum to this review, we want to recognize Peter and the housekeeping department. Peter had a very comical spirit and was highly apologetic when he delivered the heat dish and ethernet cable to our room. The housekeeping department was also very thoughtful by providing us with extra bottled water.

Very cold room... AC was on full blast

Was unable to control the AC in the room. Was on full blast and easily kept the room below 15C consistently. Calls to front desk to resolve led to no fix.

The skinny

It was a pleasant experience the staff is very nice. When I checked i at approximately 11:00 pm they were pretty full so they upgraded me for my complete stay to a suite! It was a very comfortable room, I would say the only thing I could mention that would be constructive criticism is the elevators were a bit slow. Over all good place to stay.

The first room that I was checked

The first room that I was checked into was smelt dank and was badly worn, as was the second. Finally I was upgraded to a better room, although it did not have any heating and was quite unpleasantly cold. This hotel seems to have passed its hayday and is somewhat run down. I have got far better quality and value for money elsewhere. On the other hand it is located on a beautiful treelined road nearby the domestic airport so could be ok for those taking domestic flights and Ikea (where you can get a featherdown doona, you might need it if the heating system is not working in your room) and Outback Steakhouse are located next door.

It was a great and pleasant stay

It was a great and pleasant stay thru out the 6 days in Taipei. This hotel from facilities, cleanliness up to people and services were all met my requirements. Need to specially mention the extremely good services and friendliness that rendered by the conceirge staff. Everytime we asked about directions, despite of their busy works, they still very patient and shown us the map how to get to the destinations. Overall, i am very satisfied with this hotel and for sure will come back on my next visit to Taipei. A small little suggestion to make it even more perfect is to consider changing the bfast menu daily, this is more for the guest who staying there for more than 3 days.
