Wonderful Experience

The hotel staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The location is midway between to the main ski lifts (gondolas & trains). Great breakfast included. Free wifi as well. Lively apre-ski entertainment at the adjacent pub. Some rooms with balconies and a beautify view of the Matterhorn.

Dated hotel, but the staff was great!

Upon reaching Zermatt I called the hotel from the train station phone and they sent a taxi promptly. The Hotel is centrally located - a 5 min walk to the center of town. The hotel is dated and in need of a refresh. The rooms are huge however and ours had a large balcony. Fortunately we were on the second floor on the opposite side from the bar downstairs. The bar and night club are popular and LOUD. I felt sorry for anyone on that side of the hotel. The staff was wonderful. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful. The owner stopped by during dinner to say hello and ensure we were happy. The best part of our stay was the bartender, [...]. He was great fun and made all the hotel shortcomings seem charming. If [...] were not there I think my experience would have been completely different. The food was adequate - nothing great, but sufficient. Our stay was very expensive for a 2 - 3ish star hotel. However, we were only staying 2 nts and it is Zermatt so it's hard to find anything available let alone inexpensive. BOTTOM LINE: I'm sure there's better out there, but if the purpose of your Zermatt trip is outdoor activities then the Astoria will fill your need for a clean room and warm bed.

Better than we imagined

I had been to the Astoria many times in the 1990's but hadn't remembered how charming it was. Our room had a huge wrap-around balcony and a wonderful view. It was a great location with restaurants, ski and tourist shops, the bus to the lifts and the river all very close by. The staff couldn't have been nicer. The room came with earplugs because there are several hot nightspots down stairs. The music played loud late into the night. I happened to like the music so to my surprise it didn't bother me a bit.
