Best view in Luzern
Every picture of Luzern you see has the kapellbrucke or chapel bridge in the forefront and in the background are charming buildings, the Hotel des Alpes being one of them. Our room was ready right at check in time and we had a balcony with a view overlooking the river and bridge. The room was adequate size for two people, typical european size and the bathroom compact and included a hair dryer. The train station and the area where you buy tickets for the cruises is a quick 3 block walk from the hotel. Being in the old town pedestrian zone was very convenient for shopping and eating. Resturaunt and sidewalk cafes on site were good, also many interesting old buildings in the area. The continental style breakfast was very good. Coffe tea and juice of course, cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs(colored!), meats, bread and wonderful Swiss cheeses. We were planning on sight seeing after check out time and they let us keep our suitcases in a locked storage room until we were done.

Great location
The Hotel des Alpes is immediately across a short bridge from the train station, situated directly on the river. The views from the river side are fantastic. Its location, in the old town section, is perfect. Service was very good. They have a computer with internet access, available for 15 minutes at a time for free, and with slight charges for more time, as well as wireless access for a reasonable fee. So you can stay connected to the outside world while enjoying the buildings and sights of old Lucerne. Many excellent restaurants within easy walking distance.

Great Location
The Hotel Des'Alpes on the riverfront in Luzern is right in the heart of the city. You can easily walk to the train station, the famous covered bridges, the lake, and several charming resturaunts. Furthermore you get the charm of not only a great location, but also breakfast on the balcony overlooking the river, an old elevator, big windows that open out without screens, and a down comforter. It was unusally hot when we were there, and the hotel is not air-conditioned but they did provide a fan in the room. At night we had to leave our windows open and the clamour of late night beer garden patrons followed by early morning church bells and trucks setting-up for Saturday morning markets made for less than ideal sleep. Nonetheless, I would stay there again for its distinct European flavor and great location in one of Switzerland's most picturesque cities.

Short walk from hotel
On summer Saturdays visit open-air markets. Directly in front of the hotel a farmer's market sells fresh meat, flowers, cheese and produce. A few blocks into the city artists and craftspeople sell their wares. Across the river, and slightly downriver is a flea market with everything from Elvis records to Swiss cow bells.

Go to the "Suite" Club at the top of the Monopol hotel... it's a short walk... no cover, and really great view of the city.

Problems
Though this hotel had a great location and view, it was a poor value compared to other places that we stayed in Switzerland. The price was much higher than others and we had a shower that could not be regulated. When we thought we had the water regulated to the correct temperature, it would suddenly become so hot that it almost burned the skin and it was necessary to immediately get out of the way. A few seconds later, it would turn very cold. The television was extremely small and located high on the wall. Though we do not watch much television on a pleasure trip, we sometimes use it for a while after a tiring day of traveling, walking, tc.

The wooden bridge is a wonderful piece of history as well an attractive addition to the city. The Jesuit church across from the hotel is absolutely incredable and a must see.

Great Location
The Hotel des Alpes is in a great location. We had a room with a balcony that overlooked the river and the famous covered bridge & water tower. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the rail station. There are lots of good restaurants nearby.

Good accommodations in superb location
We had an enjoyable 2 nights here in a 4th floor room on the street side. Our room had a private balcony with a partial view of the city wall towers and city hall, lit up at night. It was very quiet except for the church bells ringing. You can't beat the location. It's right on the lake in the historic part of town. The room was spacious and clean; the bed was large and comfy. We had a teakettle and coffee/tea makings, and a fan. With the balcony doors open and the fan on, we were comfortable even in hot weather. The front desk staff were very helpful, spoke excellent English, and booked an excursion for us to Mt. Pilatus. The breakfast selection was good, and there was plenty of food available. You can dine on a balcony overlooking the lake. The hotel's restaurant was one of the most affordable places we found for dinner in the historic district of town. Restaurants in Lucerne are quite expensive, so this was a nice plus. The food was good and the view excellent. Our only quibble would be that they charge for Internet access, whether you use their WiFi or the computer in the lobby. You can easily walk here from the train station even with luggage. It's right across the lake over a short bridge.

The most affordable nearby location for groceries or food souvenirs (chocolate, preserves, etc.) is in the basement of the train station. There's a Co-Op market there with a wide selection and good prices.
