Friendly, welcoming, and charming
This hotel is small and friendly with a knowledgeable and helpful staff. It's about a 15-minute bus ride from the center of Lucerne, but the buses run regularly. (Take the #24 bus from in front of the Lucerne train station and get off at the Hermitage stop.) The hotel is on a road that's busy during commuting hours, and train tracks run behind it, but surprisingly we were not disturbed by noise. We just closed the windows when we were ready to go to sleep. A nice breakfast is included and a slow but usable computer is available for free internet access. The room was very clean and attractive. Not luxurious but it had a simple charm. Plan your day so that you will not need to make multiple trips to and from the city. There are no businesses (or restaurants) near the hotel except for The Hermitage across the street, the Bellevue's higher-end sister hotel.

Several travel guides have self-guided walking tours that are quite nice. You can just wander around the old part of Lucerne, walk through the covered bridges, sit at the river's edge and watch the swans and ducks, or sit at a riverside cafe. Everywhere you look there's beauty to be seen . . . the lake, the turrets and towers, the amazing old buildings. We spend a wonderful day without paying for any boat rides or guides, although I'm sure those attractions are wonderful too. It's a truly lovely city.
