Beautiful hotel in great location

The Tryp Gran Via is a great choice in Madrid. It is located steps from the Gran Via Metro stop, close to tons of shops, restaurants and major attractions in central Madrid. It is also easily accessible from the airport via the Madrid Metro. The staff here was incredibly friendly and helpful, providing me great information on activities taking place while I was there. The room is very nice, it has the basic needs (bed, safe, flat screen TV-mostly Spanish channels, comfortable size bathroom). My only complaint is that you can easily hear what's going on outside, the walls are paper thin.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

If you're looking for good quality food, you're better off eating in the Salamanca neighborhood of Madrid (just north of El Parque del Retiro). The food in central Madrid is pricey and leaves a lot to be desired! My favorite is the Trobador restaurant on Paseo de Recolectos (near the Biblioteca Nacional), they have a 3 course day time menu for 12 euros (appetizer, main course, dessert and a drink). One key thing while in Spain, the Spanish tend to eat their largest meal during lunch time (usually between 1pm and 5pm) so most restaurants offer "El Menu Del Dia", the Menu of the Day, 2 to 3 course meal for 10 to 12 euros.
