Overview

The Room Mate Laura, resting in the Descalzas district, prides itself on having a modern outlook. Rather than providing a restaurant, the rooms all come complete with their own kitchen. Some of the finest restaurants in the country surround the building, which makes finding somewhere good to eat an easy process. The cozy rooms at Room Mate Laura sport unique decor and all feature a balcony. From the moment guests arrive, the 20-meter-high lobby provides a warm, welcoming feeling, one which the staff strives to continue for the entire visit.

Rooms

The Room Mate Laura resides in a new building, conserving the style of the 19th century. Inside, designer Tomas Alia has created wide-open spaces that are innovative in their grandness yet welcoming to guests. The rooms are perfect for modern guests and have a real sense of the avant-garde, New York style about them. The rooms at the Room Mate Laura come standard with LCD flat-screen TVs connected to satellite for multi-channel choices. Free Wi-Fi Internet access, a phone line and a wake-up service are also standard features, as are in room-safes, minibars and air conditioning. The rooms are more like apartments, and come with separate living rooms, laundries and kitchens on one floor, and bedroom/s and bathrooms on another.

Great Service Great Location

Would recommend Sat, Oct 17, 2015
We had a great few days at the Laura - the staff on the front desk were always helpful & welcoming. They were great in keeping us abreast of the impact of a public holiday would have on our plans & recommending how we could make the most of the celebrations.

Cute but better options available at this price

Would not recommend Tue, Dec 3, 2013
Summary Cute, but for the same price we stayed in another Madrid hotel that was far better. The Good The décor was charming and unique. Easy walking distance to many historic and travel worthy sights including the palace (though at the opposite end of city center from the Prado and museums). They upsold us to a suite because it was ready early. It was very a very spacious bedroom, living area, loft, and second balcony for the price. The Bad We were disturbed by loud drunks who yelled in the streets and toppled trashcans at 4AM. Has not been maintained well since it was remodeled. The small streets were surprisingly full of car traffic and loud. Had the firmest and least comfortable bed of 3 hotels we stayed at in Spain. The shower was tiny and in disrepair.

Dining

Visit a Museao de Jamon for cheap beer, wine, cured meats, including jamon of course!

New favorite hotel

Would recommend Sat, Mar 24, 2012
Really liked this place, location was perfect, just off of Playa del Sol, incredibly easy to get to off the Metro. Lobby didn't make a great first impression, sort of funky modernista european with staff behind what looks like control room, but loved everything else. Bed was probably the most comfortable of all the places I stayed in Spain, room was spacious, nice bathroom, very cute balcony. Would definitely stay here again.

Good location

Good, central location. The loft room was spacious but cold, in temperature. The air con units only provided cooling, not heat. The continental breakfast was simple but satisfying. And wonderful that they had such expansive breakfast hours.

Great Location!!

Would recommend Wed, Nov 18, 2009
Different and unique hotel. Bigger rooms than usual for Europe. The front desk was most helpful and very friendly. Suggested great restaurants and made reservations for us. Location was great as we were able to walk to everything we wanted to do. Street noise really wasn't a problem for us. Enjoyed the hotel breakfast. The bathroom had a very bad moldy smell. We paid for a deluxe room with kitchen but did not get that. Didn't realize it until the day we left that we were supposed to be in a deluxe room. So be sure to get what you pay for!

Ultra hip hotel in excellent location

Would recommend Thu, Aug 27, 2009
We were upgraded to a "duplex" which had a loft with an extra bed/futon and small desk upstairs. Very cool design and nice amenities. We paid $127 and that included breakfast for 2 people. Minutes from shopping, royal palace, and Santo Domingo metro station. Would stay here again and will also look for smae brand of hotels in other cities for future trips.

Shopping hint

Most small shops and bars do not take credit cards. There are plenty of ATMs throughout the city for getting cash. Bring 10 Euros if possible to get started on the metro. For some reason none of our credit cards or ATM cards worked in the metro ticket machines at the airport. We ended up with 46 Euros in coins after using a 50 Euro bill!
