overall pleasant stay for our needs

Staff was excellent and very helpful. Location is great. Internet is an issue in terms of room access (although they have a business center). The walls are thin and you can hear everything. Although with any of the issues mentioned, you could not beat the deal we got so it was well worth it.

Average

Bring your ear plugs - the walls are paper thin! Great location next to the Royal Palace, except hotel is on a busy road.

smack in the middle

pleasant, clean, simple rooms. Unfortunately, an older construction with relatively poor soundproofing - and Spaniards stay up late! (but they don't get up very early so there are opportunities for revenge :) ) Located about 5 minutes from 2 Metro stations. Right across the street from the high retaining wall around the Gardens of the Royal Palace. A nice walk to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor with a lot of interesting sights along the way.

Pricy but nice location, Metro at 10 min walk.

it was just OK. No ice machine (couldn't cool the drinks), no coffee maker, Good shower temperature and pressure (important) smallish room (3 single beds no couch) but we only stayed one night before airport so it was ok. $80 a night not a great deal. Older hotel but not terrible. Some tapas places nearby, you can walk out and have a good selection of places to eat, but nothing mind blowing. Before this hotel we stayed at some apartments near SOL and that is where the nightlife is (tapas, bars, shops). If you are young, 20-35 years old, stay near SOL, if you are older with less energy by night, this is a good choice. IT ALL DEPENDS. The staff speaks english, they are helpful (we needed hot water for the tea, so they gave us a pot at the reception, i.e. the guy went out of his way to help us) they also offer discounted tours or bicycle rentals which i would suggest. Metro to Plaza Espanya at 8-10 minute uphill-ish walk, not bad. Tons of taxis passing by. All in all, doable.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Sidreria L is old and not attractive....BUT its very good, the drinks are dirt cheap, and the nice server always give syou free tapas when you order drinks! we were stuffed and not expensive. One of those, non-tourist traps because it looks and serves locals. (about 10-12 min walk from Hotel Principe Pio) CHEAP, BIG PORTIONS, TASTY, GOOD, NICE PEOPLE, LOCAL. NON-TOURISTY.

Not so wonderful place after all

The hotel is very near the Almudena cathedral and Palacio Real, and that was the reason I booked this hotel. It is, though, in another area entirely, under a passageway, and it really is another neighborhood and another vibe down there, not as nice as the one on top.

Basic affordable bed in city center

Looking for a place to stay overnight to make our flight connection. It met our need for a place to sleep.

Very dirty and uncomfortable.

We got a triple room and got very disappointed . The carpet was extremelly dirty, there were 3 rolling bed look like beds in a very small room. Beds were touching eachother and there was no room to walk. Front staff is rude and it takes forever to check you in. Their wiffi is down most of the time. It is expensive for the type of rooms they have. Left after the first noisy night. Not a family hotel.
