Very warm welcome

We were offered a glass of champagne as soon we arrived at the reception, the staff was very friendly and helpfull. Free use of the spa, and the interior design is very beautiful. Breakfast buffet very good, we really enjoyed our stay.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

El Rincon de Esteban, very friendly staff and excellent food for a very good price, and you get a lot of extras, really good value and beautiful decoration, not too many tables, I think it sits max. 40. Absolute privacy, people can not see you from the street. The funny thing is, as soon we approached the entrance, a waiter opened already the door for us,

Right in the thick of it!

Right from the moment our taxi pulled up at the kerb somewhere about 50 metres from the front door of the hotel, to be met by a member of staff almost before we had alighted, certainly got us off to a good start. Everything about this hotel deserved top marks. It is right in the center of Madrid in Plaza de la Independencia, close to everything. The staff even supplied us with a couple of white serviettes to take to the bullfight!

Great Experience

This hotel is truly in one of the best locations in Madrid. Very close to metro, close to Retiro park, all the museums, restaurants, cafes. Luxurious room with turn down service. My room was very large and bright and I paid for the cheapest available room. I did not have a view of Puerta de Alcala but I had a nice bright view of a courtyard. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The first few days they didn't have a room key for me because the last guest had lost it. That was a little bit of an annoyance but one of the staff at the desk, Tiago, was able to replace it without any problems. Would definitely stay here again.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Best deal to airport is bus that leaves every 15 minutes from Plaza Cibeles a 5 minute walk from this hotel. Costs 5 euros and gets you there in about 30 minutes.

Looks amazing but really NOT

Looks amazing on the pictures and even when you get there, on the surface. But personnel are so untrained, even if kind. Don’t expect anything related to a 4 or 5 star hotel. Very trendy and nice decor. Rooms very design, but so many of them face the internal "court", really like a big decorated ventilation court 5m x 4m, so impossible to open the curtains without having another 10 rooms plunging into your bedroom. Virtually no lobby. Don’t go there with a car; there is nowhere to even stop. They have what they call a “valet”. That means that you have to leave the car unattended on a bus stop 15m away from the lobby, run to the lobby and ask them to go and pick up your car. They will do it within 5-10min... To get my car back one day took them up to 25mins, because the guy was busy with another client… at the end we were simply parking in the next door public underground parking. Wifi is free. But first room had such low signal that impossible to connect. So they apologiesed (they knew fully the problem) and changed us to a room that had better signal, but speed of internet was so low that I eventually went and bought a GSM card that was so Much faster… In the second room, beautiful, apart the “view” on and from the internal "court", there was sewage smell in the shower. I guess the drainage had a problem. Told them, but nobody cares. The rest of the “no Smoking” room smelt like an ashtray anyway, so who cares… Concierge, there is none as such, just the same untrained person at the desk. We asked him once to book a specific restaurant in the Garden, in a restaurant where 80% of the value is the Garden… He told us it was confirmed, no problem. When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess apologized so deeply saying she had told him several time “but let them know it will be inside, we are fully booked in the Garden”, but he couldn’t care less. Given the rest of our experience, we did believe here… When you check-in nobody shows you your room, would be ok if they were simple to find. There are several elevators for different parts of the hotel. So after coming back to reception and asking 3 times where our room was, the guy suddenly felt like showing us the right elevator… And so on, and so on…

Exceptional design, average service

Hotel design and amenities are great including a spa, bicycles you can borrow, delicious breakfast, splendid rooms with wooden floor and a large bathroom, exposed beams in top-floor rooms, etc. Location is also perfect with many landmarks, restaurants and metro stations at walking distance. However, there is room for improvement on service quality. We had to carry our suitcase to our room, request different passwords every 24 hours for Internet access for each device, deal with receptionists who were very polite and helpful but not really friendly, wait 15 minutes to get our luggage from the porter, etc. All in all, a very good experience that could have been exceptional with that little extra something that only people can bring...
