Bilbao's Best

This is a great facility directly across from the Guggenheim. Very comfortable and friendly. Good cafe. Overpriced breakfast, alas staff at desk is willing to help but poorly trained as a concierge service for out of town/country visitors. There is no concierge as such to help. But location and wonderful facility makes a positive experience.

Bank adventure

Opposite the Guggenheim with stunning view! 2 minutes from the tram which takes you everywhere. Where all the bands stay for the bbk and good bar hangout... Great view from breakfast terrace. Only negative: weird window between bathroom and bedroom which meant you could see in, and could not be changed. Lovely slippers we have kept for our whole trip. Lovely candy at front desk (only eat the pear flavored ones) and great staff who are very helpful and funny. Go during the festival but not necessarily for it, you'll still get the vibe at this hotel! Xoxo vf

A great start to our Honeymoon!

Located right in front of the Guggenheim, the Gran Domine was more than we expected. It started with check in. The front desk staff was extremely polite and informative. Checking in was a breeze. Additionally, they congratulated us on our recent wedding and proceeded to give us a voucher for a complimentary drink at their bar. They also gave us complimentary vouchers to visit the Guggenheim. They provided a map of Bilbao, noted places to definitely see and suggested several places to eat. Before we left the check in desk, they gave us several codes to use for the Free WIFI which we were able to use for our cell phones and computer from our room! Our bags were taken up to our room and our car parked. We entered the room and were very impressed. it was very spacious (for a European hotel), very clean, bright and uniquely designed. The bathroom included complimentary bathrobes and quality amenities for anything you may have forgotten, or didn't even consider. My wife fell in love with the spa style bathtub. We stayed there an entire week and the quality of service we received continued the entire time. Each day we traveled on our own to different parts of the Northern Coast. And each day, Hotel staff provided maps, suggested places to see, and places to eat. The Hotel is located in a great spot. A mere 15 minutes from the airport, an 8 minute cab ride to the train station and a 20 minute walk to the old town (Casco Viejo). We found Bilbao to be very central to visit many other cities such as San Sebastian, Santander, the Rioja wine region and smaller towns in-between (highly suggest renting a car AND gps). We did day trips to these areas and still had time to enjoy Bilbao. One thing to be aware of and took some time to get used to is la siesta. In the Northern part of Spain, they take their siesta seriously and virtually everything closes from 1-5pm. You need to schedule your traveling around it to make most of your time. Many restaurants do not open for dinner before 8:30pm. IN any event, ask the hotel staff and they will direct you to great local bars which serve "pintxos" (tapas) throughout the day. Also, pintxos are usually paired with a "tinto" (red wine) or cana (beer) at all hours of the day. Suggest stopping by a local market and buying a few bottled waters to keep in the room. We found the people in the Northern part of Spain to be extremely friendly and helpful. Euskadi is the primary language (nothing like spanish) in this Region but all were fluent in Spanish (castellano) and many spoke English. A very interesting part of our stay at the Gran Domine was that the soccer team Sporting Lisbon stayed at the hotel the night before their match against Athletic Bilbao. Lastly, we ate at the Hotel's restaurant which was fantastic. We will definitely return to Bilbao and the Gran Domine

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Plan your day around la Siesta. Virtually everything is closed during this time. If you want a bite to eat, stop by a bar and have a 1 or 2 pintxos a tinto or cana then move on to another bar for another round. This is how locals eat and the bars have their specialty pintxos. Enjoy!

One Of The Best Ever!

The hotel has a magnificent location opposite the Guggenheim Museum and Bilbao's sculptural and fragrant "Puppy". My 10 year-old grandson and I arrived fairly late at night and after checking in to our beautiful room, crossed the street to walk around the museum and observe the play of light along the river against the titanium sheathed curves of the Guggenheim. It was pure magic. The hotel's buffet breakfast is abundant with many delicious offerings and the setting allows you to observe the Guggenheim in the changing moods of early morning light. The staff are gracious and welcoming and the whole experience was just truly wonderful in every way. Be sure to walk up the curving staircase to the top floors and look down for a marvelous visual and photographic sculptural treat. A few minutes walk away is Santiago Calatrava's airy pedestrian bridge. The hotel is excellently located to walk to restaurants, shopping and the old section of Bilbao, the Casco Viejo. The Silken Gran Domine is a treat, a delight and a wonderful guest experience.

I would definitely come back!

The staff were very kind and helpful in extending advice on how to move around town and so. The hotel is very stylish in design. It is quite impressive. I was given a Cava bottle as a Christmas gift :)

Nightlife tip: Long walk from hotel

Pay a visit on a Friday/Saturday evening to the old town east of the river and you will find tens of packed bars with some really good pintxos (pronounced pinchos)!
