Fantastic Staff!

This was a vacation holiday before dropping my daughter off at the U of Alicante. I had always wanted to visit Barcelona and this was my chance. My husband stayed behind. I knew from the pricing right away that it would not be a five star hotel, and most four stars in the States would be more than what we payed online . Booking a standard with the hopes of upgrading to a Club was our intent. I'm always looking to get the most bang out of a buck and quite good at it. Was a travel agent for about ten years in the 80's. A few days before arriving I wrote the hotel stating that I would like to upgrade to Club with no response. On arrival I asked and was given a Club standard for the price of 60€ a night extra. The room was nothing special, but as large as an American standard I would say and had quality linens, a requirement. Settled in to find that the ac was not adequate for my liking ...the temp outside was about five degrees warmer than inside, thought not sweltering outside I need a comfortable 68- 70 at night. One phone call down and we were swiftly upgraded to a suite, which was to or amazement! I had only said I think the ac needs an update and requested a fan. The suite was huge by European standards and it had many more amenities than the Club standard had, such as apples, chocolates and more bath products, larger towels. The Club concierge room on the 18th, we were on the 17th, was similar to a Concierge room anywhere else, with a full bar, an abundance of cold breakfast items changing to tapas at noon, then cakes and fruit for tea, on to tapas and deserts for dinner hours. My daughter and I found ourselves there at least once or twice a day, also bringing mid afternoon snacks back to the room. We both found it well worth the upgrade in the very least! Everyone spoke English, was very attentive and welcoming. Liked the hotel lobby bar where football always seemed to be on. Ate only once in the hotels main restaurant and we both enjoyed it, huge salads and really reasonable prices! Spain is a huge deal for American's, we are still here and I keep being amazed at the low prices for everything. The pool and gym were a big hit with myself and my daughter, we used the leisure club daily. You do need to wear a simple cloth hat that you are provided at the pool, was nothing uncomfortable in the least. I swam laps everyday and never noticed the pool to be crowed, though we usually went there in the late afternoon when others seemed to be leaving. The location was the least desirable thing about the hotel, but on a positive note...the on and off bus stops directly outside, the metro line a five minute walk away travels to the center of things in no time and a taxi is always waiting in the lobby. For about 10€ you can be anywhere in a few minutes. Plus, Barcelona seems to be one of the safest, well educate and one of the cleanest cities I've ever traveled to! Not a single moment did we feel threatened by anyone. You get a free 15 minute massage with Club, but we figured it was just a gimmick to lure you into buying a longer one, I had had one prior to my trip so... I would confidently recommend this hotel to anyone wanting and appreciating great service over flash and pomp. I would say it does lean more towards a business clientele than the tourist resort model.

Excellent location

Fantastic location if going to watch Barca play football with the ground only a 2 minute walk away. The Metro station (Maria Christie) is a 2 minute walk in the opposite direction and is a great way to get about the City. It is on the Green Line and takes you directly to the La Ramblas' which is in the heart of the city and the Marina area.

Away from the crowds, and comfortable

This hotel is located away from the crowds of Ramblas, but is convenient by taxi and tour bus. There is always a taxi line outside, the tour bus picks up 1 block away, and there is a nice view from the upper floors. The staff was multi-lingual and quite friendly, and the room was very comfortable. The only complaint is that the pool and jacuzzi are part of the spa, and are not free. The jacuzzi water is barely warm, and the pool attendant said that it is supposed to be 30 degrees, and no warmer, and it closes at 9:30. The breakfast is quite good, and the orange juice is even better, but the drinks at the bar are 10 Euro each. Quite expensive! Overall, I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again, but would have avoided the hotel bar and not planned to use the jacuzzi unless I was planning on a spa experience.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

Concierge recommended a bus tour that picked up right by the hotel, and had shorter lines than the other company in town. The logo on the bus was a sunshine symbol (not an eyeball), it was around 21 Euro each, and we really enjoyed it.

Very good. Actually much better than expected. I traveled to Barcelona perhaps 10 times in the last 5 years, but first time at the Princesa Sofia. It is much better than I though, including a semi-olympic swimming pool, excellent.

Barcelona Hotel Princesa Sofia

The room was clean and was a large size for Europe, it included a fridge. Guest Services/Conceirge were able to speak English for any questions which came up. This hotel was located near the university, away from downtown. I like to walk, but it is too far from downtown or la rambla. Had to take the metro to get near sightseeing places. The hotel was disappointing. As a five star I would have expected the following not to be an extra charge: 1. Wifi was not included. The room had a passcode for 15 mintutes only. 2. The hotel had a nice pool and sauna area. However, I was told it was an additional charge per day of 12 Euros. 3. Unable to get the Aerobus from the hotel, or anywhere in the area of the hotel. 4. The "Top City" listed in the reviews is not a restaurant. It is only a meeting room, so you cannot go up there to eat or view the city. 5. Room service prices were absolutely overpriced.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Small plaza on Ave Diagnol (to the left of the exit of the main entrance of the hotel) had good food. The starbucks had wifi access for 45 minutes with purchase. Also, a small cage behind starbucks plaza was fantastic. They accept visa/mastercard and have pastries/coffee/fresh squeezed OJ for good prices.

July in Barcelona

Very nice hotel. The only thing I thought would have been better was the location. It wasn't near the center of Barcelona, a few subway stops. For visiting, it would have been better closer to placa catalunya. On the other hand, it's in residential part of barcelona so coming back to the hotel in the wee hours of the morning doesn't pose a problem...
