Bad bordering on horrible

This really isn't as much a hotel as a crashpad one step up from a hostel. People running it should be ashamed for calling it a hotel, because even a budget hotel shouldn't be a complete dump. The location is good: Barceloneta is a fun area, the beach is about 10 minutes walk, there are lots of places to eat and the metro station is just around the corner. You can also walk to the beachfront clubs (Opium and such) in about 15 minutes. The area is clean, lively and safe despite the hotel being located down a dead-end alley (General Castanos must not have been a very important general). The hotel itself, however, is godawful. The front-desk staff is borderline rude and not terribly helpful. You will be nickel-and-dimed for everything: WiFi (2 euros an hour, PER DEVICE), the safe, the cruddy breakfast served by a surly bartender/waiter. Walls are paper-thin and the hotel is so cramped that two people cannot pass each other in a hallway. Rooms haven't been updated in decades. Mine featured an AC unit from the previous century with an exposed rotor, hoses and cabling, hanging directly over one of the beds - I half-expected it to either fall off, or start leaking on me as I slept, or electrocute me. The bathroom is so small that you have to sit on the toilet sideways if you are an inch taller than 5ft. The safe, operated by a GIGANTIC key (too big to fit into any pocket) malfunctioned and got stuck shut, and the hotel staff could not repair it despite a lot of fiddling. Thank goodness I didn't actually put anything in. Other reviews report theft, burglary and bed bugs, but I was mercifully spared all of them. Which isn't to say it won't happen to you. There are other budget hotels nearby, and I don't know if they are any better. I've stayed at "crashpads" before, but Santa Marta takes the cake: it is likely the worst hotel I've ever paid money for. Avoid at all costs, unless you are REALLY undemanding.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The Barceloneta beach (with its beautiful girls and liberal attitudes towards swimwear) is nearby, as well as the cable car tower, which offers a gorgeous view of the city and a shortcut to Montjuic. There is a ton of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and the beachfront clubs ("near the fish") are a 15 minute stroll away. Hop On/Hop Off buses (Red Route) stop nearby as well.

great location

Super location right in the centre of Barcelona. Very basic room, but you get what you pay for. Smelly drains in bathroom, rusty shower taps, broken tiles on floor and ceiling. No tea/coffee amenities in room. Very noisy. Clean and serviced every day. Staff very approachable and helpful and friendly. Cheap and cheerful I guess but a few little changes would help.

weekend away

Stayed out of it as much as possible. Water either freezing or boiling. Could hear every noise from nearby rooms.
