Perfect for sightseeing central to most things

Clean and friendly hotel. Very central located off main La Rambla (Gothic end ) - and the Liceu Metro stop. Buy a T10 Metro ticket at the station which gives you 10 trips on the metro ( - saves 10 Euro and means you don't have to queue for tickets) The Frontage of Casa Mila is covered up and under renovation at the moment which was a bit disappointing as this wasn't mentioned on the website - however we did go in and up to the famous Gaudi chimneys which had a fabulous view of Barcelona.

Right where it's at in Barcelona

Excellent service when we arrived from concierge and the manager ensured it was very easy for us to book a flamenco night on the spur of the moment for that same evening; even going outside to point directions for us. Room small but clean and contemporary decor. It was an excellent base for busy 3 night break. Very clean and comfortable beds. Quiet room overlooking small inside courtyard. Recommended to us and we would recommend as great position; just off the Ramblas to be right in the heart of the city, where it was all happening.

Buy a Barcelona card before you go - online, then pick up as you leave the airport from information booth - Easy, so for all your journeys - from the time you leave the airport on a bus to the metro's trains and trams city - just stick in the card read the signs - it's all there for you. BCN card included reduced price for some museums (Includes great 35 in pleasure boat trip for free and Cable Car reduction to get up to see the castle), or Barcelona travel card just free travel. Take your pick.

Perfect location for a city break

We were a bit worried by the reviews and were therefore pleasantly surprised; Location is perfect - less than 5 minutes from Las Ramblas and in a good street with lots of shops and restaurants. Room was a bit small and lacked the character of the exterior but was clean and in good repair and the air conditioning was a godsend! We were a bit disapointed that there wasn't a kettle but otherwise it's just as good as one of the better budget chains in the uk. No matter where you are in the centre of town, you're going to get street noise (especially if there's a fiesta going on!) and the spanish don't seem to do double glazing so take some ear plugs or an ipod with you.

Great location

A good hotel and a comfortable stay. Beware of hidden charges, we had to pay for wifi and for hotel safe. The hotel has a great location for exploring Barcelona with basic but comfortable rooms.

Great location, but less than great reception.

When we arrived at the Rialto, they could not "find" our reservation, despite my printout of info showing confirmation numbers and pre-payment. They insisted we had to contact our travel agent as it was not their fault but they had no info or payment in their system. It was only upon my perseverance and refusal to leave their front desk that they continued to talk to some central office and got it resolved (in about 30 minutes). Subsequent interactions with hotel personnel were fine, but those first moments were less than positive. Good location and basic rooms and amenities. EXCELLENT free walking tour offered daily there at the nearby TravelBar. Duncan was wonderful!

excellent experience

The staff was helpful and booked another night for us on staurday that was at a better rate than what we had the previous nights. The room was small but fit our needs and the Hotel is in a great location relative to the downtown area.

Great Value

The room was tiny and did not have an iron or hair dryer. We had to put down a deposit to get those two items. Similar to other people's reviews - the hotel is almost like a maze, it's easy to get lost in the small, dimly lit hallways. However, the location was perfect, and the hotel staff was very accomodating. They answered all of our questions, and we had a lot of them. Definitely don't expect luxury, or to have peace and quiet in the morning. But I would go to this hotel again in a heartbeat!

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

Just walk to Placa Catalunya and purchase all your tickets at the tourist info office. It is the easiest and best way to see Barcelona. I highly recommend the Gaudi bus tour!

Avoid!

We reserved a room for one night so we could look for a less expensive hotel. Our friends booked it over the internet. At least we had a room. Our friends reservation was not found, so they had no room, and the hotel staff flatly refused to help them find a room. We asked for a receipt for the room charges, and they refused to give us one. In forty years of traveling, we have never run into that. The room was hot, tiny, and uncomfortable, but clean. They were helpful with the luggage. Anywhere in this area of Barcelona, rooms facing the street are particularly noisy except from 4 AM to 6AM, primarily because the streets are narrow, and surrounded by tall, stone buildings. It's an echo chamber of the first order. Even normal conversation on the street is loud. But, you couldn't stay in a more intersting area. Hundreds of restaurants and shops, the tourist bureau a few yards away, and enough history to please anyone. We ended up staying at the Gran Hotel Barcino just down the street. Much larger, more comfortable room, better service, and 29 Euro cheaper. Both hotels are near the Placa de Sant Jaume. Hotel Barcino corporate web site:www.gargallohotels.es. Learn some basic Spanish before you go. Very few people in Barcelona speak English, even at the airport.

Walk, walk, walk. You will see something of interest about every other step. The city comes alive about 7 PM, and stays alive well past midnight. La Romba - a street about 400 meters to the west of the Placa de St. Jaume - is vibrant and crowded, with many pleasant surprises. To the east of the Placa is the Metro station, and further, a beautiful city park. You could spend days within a mile of the Placa, and still not see it all.
