arrived at hotel at 10:00, room was not ready; I had some bad food on plane, so I didn't want to walk around until I rested. ... Well, they said it would be 12 or 1:00; about an hour later, the gentleman told me the room was ready. I asked him about some tours and he suggested the hop on hop off bus and noticed my pins I had on my jacket; since he helped me get to my room early, I gave him a pin; he was very helpful to me with my questions on sites after that. He also told me about a great restaurant

Good, safe, central location.
Joan Sep 23, 2009
We chose this hotel based on location and were very satisfied with the central, safe location and pleasantly surprised by the ... fact that it is on a pedestrian plaza with no vehicles. There were several restaurants and coffee bars within an easy walking distance. It is an older hotel in age and style, but overall, very nice. The staff spoke English very well and were helpful. Wireless internet is available on the ground floor at no cost - a real plus in Europe these days.

Great Location on an active square
Glen & Holly Jun 4, 2009
Our Orbitz booking worked perfectly. we disembarked from our ship before our room was ready. They stored our luggage and we ... went sight seeing. Came back around 12:30 and our room was still not ready but they upgraded us to a Superior room at no extra charge. The room had a sitting room larger than the bedroom. Both had a TV and telephone. Both rooms had floor to ceiling brass framed glass doors that opened to folding wooden shutters and its own balcony. Opening the doors to both balconies provided a wonderful cross breeze. The bath was terrific. The staff provided assistance willingly and spoke English. They made sure we got our very early morning wake up call and had a taxi waiting for our trip to the airport. We had planned to eat in a restaurant we had researched but it was closed on Sunday evenings. The staff gave us a recommendation for another restaurant. After a full day of enjoying Barcelona, we ordered a bottle of Spanish wine at the hotel's sidewalk tables and watched the parade of people in the square. The hotel is directly across the square from the Cathedral. We then decided to go inside and eat at the hotel's restaurant. The food was excellent and the service superb. We would definitely book this hotel in the future,

super location
Solo Survivor Adventure Jun 2, 2009
The room was clean but small I believe for a four-star hotel. The amenities in the bathroom were very helpful. The staff are ... not very friendly and do not go out of their way to assist with even a local phone call to the train station. It was noisy in the sense that there are two heavy doors in the room; i.e. one into the room itself and another door into the bedroon. You can hear these doors slamming all hours. Not sure I would stay here again although the location was good.

In times past travelers checks were the best. However, the banks in Spain charge 18% to exchange them. It is better to carry cash in a money belt and exchange at your first international location.

Good Hotel, good location
Mark & Di May 27, 2009
Overall we found the Hotel very nice. There are English speaking people at the front desk and they are very helpful. The ... Hotel advertised DVD players in the rooms so I brought DVDs with me since I knew the TV would be only in Spanish. Well, it's a bit of a curve ball because 1 - you have to pay 9 Euro to use the DVD player and I think you can only play 2 movies and 2 - the DVD player only accepts European DVDs which are evidently formatted differently than American ones. The first night we were there the hotel had turn down service but they did not repeat that on the second night. You can purchase a ticket packet at the front desk for the hop on hop off double decker Bus Touristic. This gives you a map, discount booklet for local attractions and 2 Euro off the price of the ticket which you can either buy at the Tourist Information Center close by or right on the Tour Bus. It's a VERY good buy, particularly if you purchase the two-day ticket. I think it was 21 Euro for one day and 27 Euro for 2 day. There are three different buses which go to three different areas. One connects to the next so it's easy to hop off one and hop on the next. They are red, blue and green. We only had time to do the red and blue and they were very good. If you plan on taking a lot of photos please be warned that Barcelona is a very green city. There are trees lining all the streets which make it nearly impossible to get good photos from any angle. It's a good idea to buy a book such as "Best of Barcelona" or a bunch of post cards to get the best photos. The Gaudi architecture is not to be missed but difficult to take photos because of the trees. You can find books all along Las Ramblas which are called "Gaudi's complete works". It's worthe the 10 Euro. Many shops and restaurants do not have any English speaking help so carry a dictionary or know what you want in advance. Some restaurants do have English language menus if you ask for one. The hotel arranged for a wake up call and a taxi for us on the last day and they were truly very helpful with any questions we had. Many of the hotels don't have English speaking help so this is a huge plus. I would definitely stay there again. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the Barcelona Cathedral which was unfortunately completely covered in scaffolding. The glass doors to the balcony are completely sound proof and despite the nightly music and restaurants in the square you could not hear anything from inside the room. We were very impressed. It's only a few blocks to Las Ramblas from the hotel and there are countless shops and restaurants in the small alleys which shoot off the Square. There is also a Starbucks right across the street which is a big plus for us. The only thing missing was English Television or the ability to rent English speaking movies in the room. Other than that it was perfect!

If you plan to see the Palau de Musica which is a must see attraction, you must purchase your tickets in advance. They are only open until 3 p.m. and you can only go through on an organized tour. English tours sell out very quickly so it's worth the walk to purchase the tickets a day in advance. We missed out on getting an English tour so we had to go on a Spanish Speaking tour or miss the place altogether. I went to the Museum Gift shop beforehand and bought a book on the Palau so that I would have an idea of what was going on. The place is breathtaking and a must see. Also, be prepared to pay for everything you want to see. Even all the churches charge admission and it's not cheap. The Barcelona Cathedral has free admission for a few hours every day. Just check the sign on the front of the church. It's not worth paying to go in because you can see only a limited area of the church.

Walking Central
Expat May 15, 2009
We've stayed at the Hotel Colon three times and it will be our regular hotel in Barcelona from here on out. The location is ... key--100 feet across a very active pedestrian square from the Cathedral, 10 minutes walk through picturesque narrow shopping streets to Las Ramblas, 15 minutes another way to the activities around the harbor, 5 minutes to the magnificent Palace of Catalan Music, easy place to get a taxi for other sights. Because car access is limited to a side street which dead-ends at the square, the hotel is remarkably quiet. The rooms are very comfortable. Dinner in the restaurant was very good, and the breakfast buffet in the same space was more than adequate. In-room internet access through the TV (we hadn't brought a laptop) is a nice touch--they charge reasonably for access by 24-hour period, which we found much more convenient than watching a clock in a business center or internet cafe. Finally, and as important as anything else, the room rate was also reasonable for this quality hotel, making the overall stay very good value.
Traveler type: Couples
The Palau de Musica Catalan is a century old concert hall which people normally just visit because the interior and exterior decoration is so over the top. However it's also a really great place for a concert--so long as you avoid the upper balcony, from which visibility is limited.

Pre cruise hotel was quaint and comfy
JB May 4, 2009
Mother and daughter stayed here pre-cruise. We were able to get into our room early after our overnight flight. The hotel ... has french balconies that are charming. Ours was on the side, but still provided a view of the Catherdral plaza and was close to the tourist double decker bus stop. The staff was professional and helpful. The room was small but had everything we needed.
