Beautiful Hotel in the middle of it all
The hotel is situated perfectly on Las Ramblas surrounded by the hustle and bustle of street performers and restaurants and 1 block from the Placa de Catalonia where the bus tours and other activities originate. When entering the hotel, you find yourself in a spacious, well-appointed lounge type lobby with friendly, multilingual, helpful reception/concierge. The rooms are spotless, in a tastefully decor, comfortable beds, marble restrooms, with mood related ligting (a first time for that) eg. relax lighting would offer a low level lighting perfect for taking a siesta. Brunch or dinner on the roof is an absolute must!!! Incredible views, beautiful decor and scrumptious food! Take a dip in the rooftop pool after brunch!

Excellent location and amenities
Located right on Las Rambla so you are in the middle of everything. Starbucks next door to maintain some connection to home (assuming that you are from home). Nice restaurants nearby. A very short distance from Playa Catalunya from where the metro and buses (including a direct one to and from the airport) are readily accessible. Two nice touches: tea time everyday between 5-7pm and the rooftop pool/lounge/bar. Tea time is complimentary and allows for one to just chill out in the lobby lounge on the comfortable couches. The rooftop lounge area is also a nice place to chill and is really nice on a pleasant night. Clean rooms although some are small with a king bed dominating the space. Also, rooms facing the courtyard can be dark with little sunlight and really no view.

Not Applicable
Don't get the Barcelona card unless you plan to visit a boatload of museums and such. To get around the city, it seems the tourist bus card (can't remember the official name) is a better way to go since it has routes that are along the major sites in the city and therefore much more predictable. Unless you like unpredictability and figuring out maps...

Centrally-located relaxing retreat
Awesome hotel with a fantastic location in the center of everything. However, with the rooftop pool/bar/lounge area combined with the basement pool/spa it's hard to leave the hotel to go enjoy everything Barcelona has!

Don't eat on La Rambla, walk just slightly off the road to the west to find way better places much cheaper!

Great Stay
We stayed at Hotel 1898 on a Saturday before a cruise and a Sunday after the cruise. My wife and I agreed that it was the nicest hotel we've ever stayed in. The rooms were large, beautiful, and had amazing bathrooms. The staff spoke great English and the location can't be beat. The only negatives were some noise issues. In our first room, there was a strange creaking that repeated off and on consistently. The second room had a great view of Las Ramblas, but we could hear (and feel) the metro go by underground even though we were on the 3rd floor. Neither of those things kept us up, but at an expensive hotel those shouldn't happen.
