Established in 1802, Oude Werf is South Africa's oldest and most historic hotel and has defined hospitality and fine dining for centuries. Our guests enjoy the wonders of the Cape Winelands from the repose of our luxurious accommodation, situated in the historical core of the university town of Stellenbosch, only 50km from Cape Town, 25km from the sea and surrounded by beautiful mountains. Stellenbosch is famous as the premier wine region of South Africa. Located on vibrant Church Street, Oude Werf retains the graceful ambience of Georgian style throughout. Soft hues and antique furniture have been tastefully aligned with the comforts of modern living to create a calm haven from which to base your exploration of Stellenbosch. The hotel consists of 44 en suite bedrooms and 5 apartments (self catering, optional) which are individually styled with antiques collected over the years. Modern facilities, and staff who pride themselves on their friendly, personal and professional service, make each visit an enjoyable and memorable one. Our landmark 1802 Restaurant - now a beautifully redesigned 'modern-meets-vintage' bistro, with vine- covered courtyard and indoor fireside - is called "Liefde" ("Love", in Afrikaans). It serves homey, Cape classics, made with loveand a contemporary gourmet twist from chef, Albert van der Loo, matched with vintages from our world-famous wine region. Sit back and sip sundowners in the tranquility of a lovely verdant garden, or bask in the sun besides the pool. For those who feel a bit more energetic, there are signature golf courses in close proximity to the town, guided historical village walks, wine tours and a variety of other activities that can be arranged from the hotel. A myriad shops, museums, art galleries and beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture are within easy walking distance of the hotel. From 1 April to 31 October Oude Werf Hotel will complete the FINAL stage of a multi-million rand upgrade. Unfortunately, this means a temporary closure for the months of May, June & July. Please excuse any dust, noise and inconvenience while we undertake these last improvements.

Dining

Liefde Bistro
Oude Werf is one of Stellenboschs oldest - and newest - landmarks for food lovers. Our original 1802 Restaurant was an Eikestad favourite. Today, our beautifully redesigned modern-meets-vintage bistro, named Liefde (Love, in Afrikaans) still preserves our essential traditions: homey, Cape classics prepared with love and a contemporary gourmet twist from chef, Albert van der Loo. Liefdes exciting new menus features plain, simple and down-to-earth sensational! From lunchy light meals under the vines of our shady courtyard patio, to robust country a la carte dinner specialities " served alfresco or indoors around our fireplace. Settle in for a snack or sundowners at poolside. Try more-ish cheesecake or tuisgebak and coffees on our Voorstoep. And you dare not miss a taste of some of the Cape most quaffable vintages from the estates of our world-famous wine region.

A great hotel with execptional customer service.

The hotel was well appointed and had exceptional customer service. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcomed and to help you enjoy your stay. The room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was ample and modern. Breakfast was included. There was a good variety of both hot and cold items. The front desk even phoned us one morning when we were running late to make sure that we had a chance to have breakfast if we wanted it. It was a great location in the heart of Stellenbosch and I highly recommend this hotel.

Great location, decent accomodation

We stayed in the self-catering apartment section of D'Ouwe Werf. The room was average-- plenty of space, tea and coffee in the room, not so comfortable bed, nice bathroom set up; the floor seemed a little gritty when we got there. The original part of the hotel looked much more kept up-- like they put more work into it, much cuter. The apartments were reached through the courtyard of the hotel, but were located very close (adjacent) to local restaurants and we could often here some noise from the restaurants). The staff was very nice and accomodating, the free secure parking was great. The pool is very small, but in a nice shady courtyard with a sundeck and on-and-off drink service. The highlight was breakfast-- delicious cold (continental) breakfast or cooked breakfast, both of which were included in our rate. The location in the heart of town was what made our mind up for us. We would stay here again, but would try to get a room in the original part of the hotel.

Carry lots of change (5 and 2 rand coins). You'll need to tip the yellow-vested parking attendants every where you go. We never seemed to have any thing smaller than 20R on us.

D'ouwe Hotel, Stellenbosch

This hotel is very well situated in Stellenbosch and the food was excellent but rather expensive. As we were attending a convention we asked to have our breakfast earlier e.g. 06h30 but they did not open their dining room until 07h00 - they sent us a continental breakfast the night before which was good. The cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired, there were cobwebs next to and under the beds and next to the couch - bathroom had a terrible mouldy smell. Area outside rooms seemed to be a thorough fare for staff and was not that clean.

This is the oldest hotel/inn in South Africa. Right in the center of the historic town. It was renovated recently. We booked two rooms: for my husband and myself; and for our daughter. For an incredibly low price, they gave us a huge two room apartment with two luxury marble baths, a large living room and entry way, kitchen and terrace overlooking a lovely courtyard. The price also included breakfast at its well-known gourmet restaurant. And the hotel reservation included private, secure parking garage within the compound. We were more than pleased with our stay.
