Oude Werf (the old Churchyard) is South Africas oldest hotel, built on the site of its first church in the Wine capital and university town of Stellenbosch. Since 1802, this country inn has been extensively rebuilt, with most recent renovations turning this national monument into a deluxe modern hotel that still retains its historic ambiance and easy, personal hospitality. Modern meets Vintage throughout the Hotel, which steps past a Georgian-style facade into its inn-house, and beyond, to the vine-covered courtyard and interior of a newly-designed restaurant. An adjoining vintage-styled bar and lounge spills out into a shady central garden and pooldeck. The Hotels has 58 rooms of various sizes overlooking the garden, restaurant and Church Street. These are decorated in an easy, contemporary style, subtly combined with period-inspired details and offer king, twin or double beds and en suite bath + shower or shower-only layouts. Standard deluxe features include satellite TV, high-speed internet access, wall safe, tea/coffee-making facilities and mini bar stocked on request. Dining at Oude Werf has been a Stellenbosch must for 2 centuries. Chef Albert van der Loo continues a tradition exploring the many flavours of the area, and its top wines. Country-style breakfasts, casual lunches, hearty dinners or high tea can be enjoyed indoors or out in a unique new eatery that features an in-situ kitchen, running water and a shady vine-covered courtyard.. Centrally located, the hotel is a stroll from many leisure experiences - the cafes of Church Street, museums, galleries, architectural and heritage sights. Board a shuttle to one of 150 wine estates outside the town. Book a wine-drive safari. Hike or peddle through a mountain reserve, or golf at a premier course. Explore beyond to towns like the gourmet capital of Franschoek, the beaches of Gordons Bay or to Cape Towns city and Peninsula, 45 km away - excursions which can all be arranged by the Hotel.

A great hotel with execptional customer service.

The hotel was well appointed and had exceptional customer service. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcomed and to help you enjoy your stay. The room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was ample and modern. Breakfast was included. There was a good variety of both hot and cold items. The front desk even phoned us one morning when we were running late to make sure that we had a chance to have breakfast if we wanted it. It was a great location in the heart of Stellenbosch and I highly recommend this hotel.

Great location, decent accomodation

We stayed in the self-catering apartment section of D'Ouwe Werf. The room was average-- plenty of space, tea and coffee in the room, not so comfortable bed, nice bathroom set up; the floor seemed a little gritty when we got there. The original part of the hotel looked much more kept up-- like they put more work into it, much cuter. The apartments were reached through the courtyard of the hotel, but were located very close (adjacent) to local restaurants and we could often here some noise from the restaurants). The staff was very nice and accomodating, the free secure parking was great. The pool is very small, but in a nice shady courtyard with a sundeck and on-and-off drink service. The highlight was breakfast-- delicious cold (continental) breakfast or cooked breakfast, both of which were included in our rate. The location in the heart of town was what made our mind up for us. We would stay here again, but would try to get a room in the original part of the hotel.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Carry lots of change (5 and 2 rand coins). You'll need to tip the yellow-vested parking attendants every where you go. We never seemed to have any thing smaller than 20R on us.

D'ouwe Hotel, Stellenbosch

This hotel is very well situated in Stellenbosch and the food was excellent but rather expensive. As we were attending a convention we asked to have our breakfast earlier e.g. 06h30 but they did not open their dining room until 07h00 - they sent us a continental breakfast the night before which was good. The cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired, there were cobwebs next to and under the beds and next to the couch - bathroom had a terrible mouldy smell. Area outside rooms seemed to be a thorough fare for staff and was not that clean.

Hidden Gem

This is the oldest hotel/inn in South Africa. Right in the center of the historic town. It was renovated recently. We booked two rooms: for my husband and myself; and for our daughter. For an incredibly low price, they gave us a huge two room apartment with two luxury marble baths, a large living room and entry way, kitchen and terrace overlooking a lovely courtyard. The price also included breakfast at its well-known gourmet restaurant. And the hotel reservation included private, secure parking garage within the compound. We were more than pleased with our stay.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

There are lots of historic buildings within steps of the hotel. You should walk around the neighborhood.
