Area description
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the historic heart of Cape Town's working harbour is South Africa's mostvisited destination, having the highest rate of foreign tourists of any attraction in the country. Set against a backdrop of sea and mountain views, it offers a variety of shopping and entertainment options to visitors, intermingled with office locations, the Somerset Hospital, hotels (such as the historical Breakwater Lodge once a 19th century prison) and luxury apartments in the residential marina.

It houses the Nelson Mandela Gateway which offers boat trips to Robben Island, as well as the Two Oceans Aquarium and Chavonnes Battery museum. The SAS Somerset is used as a museum and moored within the inner basin.

Great staff, good food and amenities, but air conditioning units could use a cleaning

Although room was clean in general (bathroom, sheets, carpets), the curtains and air conditioning unit could have used a bit of cleaning. For a four star hotel, one does not expect to see accumulated dust in the vents. The hotel could also benefit from installing windows that don't let a draft in. Since Cape Town can be windy, it can be unpleasant when a draft manages to find it way into the room when all the windows are closed. Also, it would be great if they installed windows that could keep some of the noise out. The area is generally quiet but when something is going on outside, it is quite loud. Otherwise, the staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast was also very good. The fresh fruit was great. The hotel location was also very nice (near the waterfront, near a large mall, near restaurants, near a craft market, and close to bus stops and taxi stops). It also felt safe walking around at night.
