Great Caribbean trip, Room for Improvement

The experience at arrival was underwhelming. I wasn't given a warm welcome and was waiting on line to check in with only one front desk person working. Immediately I noticed the decor of the hotel is outdated and worn out. You get the impression that the hotel isn't well maintained. After getting past the initial negative sentiment about the hotel, the experience improved. We were given a nice free upgrade, though had to reject the first room we were given because the carpet had a big, nasty pink stain. I was surprised they'd give out a room like that, but was very appreciative for the free upgrade, as well as the chocolate covered strawberries the manager David sent to make up for the inconvenience. The room we ended up getting was much better though definitely in need of a renovation. The staff was probably the best part of the hotel. They were very nice, accommodating, and truly cared to make our stay as best as possible. The outdoor area was also a plus. Beautiful, spacious pool overlooking the Dawn Beach. Dawn beach was very remote and beautiful but the seaweed there is abundant and ruins the beach in my opinion. One thing to keep in mind for anyone staying at this hotel is that cabs are extremely expensive. I would highly recommend renting a car, which you can do right at the hotel. It saves you a heck of a lot of money. Just beware driving at night in the beginning is slightly scary with the windy roads and no street lights in many areas. Overall, loved St maarten, but Westin needs to spend a lot of money fixing up the hotel.

High Standard

From the moment you checked in, you could feel the marvelous hospitality offered by everyone at the resort. After you checked in, the manager actually called you to welcome you and to make sure everything was ok. I had stayed at many 4-star, 5-star resorts in the past, never got a call from a manager like this time. The Pirate night was a great dinner event organized by the Ocean restaurant. Should be on your must-do list. This resort has a beautiful pool and a beautiful beach. I have no complaints whatsoever.

An outstanding experience at the Westin St Maarten

We are world travelers and have stayed in the finest Hotels in Europe as well the US. This was a first trip to St. Maarten and without question a most memorable experience. When we arrived we were greeted with a level of warmth that was beyond what we thought we would experience. The attention to detail, the ease of checking in was without question one of the best experiences. From that moment to our beach side and pool side attention, to the wonderful dinners with pampered care I would stay here again and I must confess I am a Ritz Carleton member accustomed to the finest treatment and care. The staff at the Westin was exemplary in every detail. My hat is off the General Manager who also came by to visit us and offered a personal gesture to anything that we needed day or night. This was a fabulous experience!

Both restaurants are superb with a delightful menu to please any palate. We did go out to a few local restaurants as well but enjoyed the Hotel in the same fashion.

Engagement Trip

We had a great time at the Westin. It's on a secluded and more upscale part of the island so you are away from the touristy part. The pool area and beach are great. Some of the bar tenders in the lobby and at the pool bar are not the most friendly of people, but the front desk, concierge, and management staff could not have been nicer and more professional - especially Fran at the concierge's desk.

Great Couple getaway

We loved the Westin and St Maarten! When looking online I thought the Westin looked like the best Hotel on the island. We prefer to be right on the beach than the center of town. We had a rental car which is a must there. The Westin was beautiful and met our expectations. It is approx. 20-30 minutes from the downtown, nightlife, and dining. If you prefer to be in the action then this is not the hotel for you. We love the action at night, but like being away from it all during the day and able walk out to the beach and have a beautiful pool on the premises. We had no problem getting a lounge chair at the pool or on the beach. Everyone was friendly on the resort. We are planning to go back to St Marteen as we didn't get to do everything we wanted in 5 days (this is better as a 7 day trip), St Marteen has amazing dining, lots to do and is safe to venture out. We recommend this hotel and would book the Westin again!

We did St Barths which is good to check off the bucket list however we felt trapped there as the ferry gets you there around 10am and doesn't leave till 6:30pm and there isn't a lot to do there. Very expensive in St Barths too (like the Hamptons of the Caribbean). If you do go to St Barths Nikki Beach was nice $30USD cab ride each way.

profits over health - don't reserve here

We planned on a great stay until we heard about the epidemic of dengue fever and chikungunya that is overtaking the Island. We contacted the hotel and they advised us that there was only two reported cases on St Maarten - that most of the victums were on the other side of the island. That information was a gross misrepresentation, there were over 200 cases of chikungunya on the island and 65 on St Maarten alone. Because my wife is at high risk for these diseases, we approached the hotel about cancelling our reservation. The managers plsition was that we should either accept the risk or pay for the entire stay. All of the other entities involved in our trip made accomodations except the Westin. Their total lack of concern for our health and the gross misrepresentation d intentional understatement of the risk, plus the fact that they have chosen not to mention the risks to prospective customers is something that any person should consider when dealjng with this hotel. Once you pass their 14 day cancellation period, they are totally inflexible on any type of financial accomodation. I would never deal with this hotel again. They are simply not honest people to deal with.
