Escape the crowds on secluded Anse Marcel on French St. Martin

Le Domaine is located on Anse Marcel, a charming bay with a white sandy beach. Anse Marcel can't be beat when it comes to a vacation far from the activity on Orient Beach and the casinos of Dutch St. Martin. Le Domaine's spacious accommodations -- 145 rooms and suites -- are spread across five Creole-style buildings in a lush tropical park facing the beach. The restaurant and beach bar are located at the edge of the beach, with views of the bay. And the resort is just a five-minute drive to Grand Case and some of the best restaurants on the island.

Highlights
  • French cuisine at the restaurant and the nearby village of Grand Case
  • Spacious rooms with water views
  • Quiet secluded beach shared with few other resorts
Rooms

Rooms vary according to size and view. The Deluxe Garden and Deluxe Terrace rooms offer garden views. The Deluxe Ocean and Deluxe Suite rooms feature views of the Caribbean Sea and the island of Anguilla in the background. The Premium Suite has just been renovated and includes a large terrace with beach views. All rooms have a circular bathtub, flat-screen television, minibar, air conditioning, and a safe and include complimentary Internet service.

Features

Private cabanas on the secluded beach are a great place to while away the hours, and other relaxing water options include the freshwater swimming pool and the hot tub. The activities desk can set guests up with kayaks, sailboats, or a ferry ride to Anguilla, where golfers can enjoy a Greg Norman-designed course on Anguilla. There's also a small fitness area, or for simply unwinding, the spa offers massages and body wraps.

The resort's restaurant serves tasty French fare, and the lounge welcomes guests every evening with live music. More entertainment and dining options are just down the road in the village of Grand Case. The island's finest seafood restaurants are situated in the small shacks that once housed the fishermen. Ocean view tables are the perfect place to enjoy fresh lobster or red snapper Provencal under candlelight while watching the waves roll ashore.

Just horrible

For the following reasons: 1. When we arrived – the telephone in the room was out of order, the middle of the room shower was not working properly which caused the flood in the room, the lights in the living room and bathroom were not working, the refrigerator was leaking, the Internet was not available for the whole stay, the TV was not working properly. 2. After numerous complaints we were told that the only available rooms have the same issues and they all have showers in the middle of the room. When our friends arrived a couple of days later, they were given the room with a SEPARATE shower. So what we were told was not true at all. 3. We had complained on a daily basis but none of the complaints were addressed. The most painful for us was the fact that Internet was not available and we have lost business because of that. We could not contact home to check on our 90-year old parents as well, which was very stressful of both sides. 4. Instead of replacing non-working telephone, the repair man took the unit apart and left it in the room for the stay without returning to fix it …..

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Some restaurants on the French side of the island offer a 1:1 exchange rate with the US dollar. The best local place we found to eat was Lolo's in Grand Case. This place has not only great food and friendly staff, but also wonderful ambiance.

Le Domaine

Overall it was a great stay, and we would go back. On the good side, the beach is fantastic, private, and beautiful. It's quiet and secluded and looks like a post card. You will not be dissapointed. Also, the hotel location (although a bit confusing to get to from the airport# was great. It was a 10 minute drive to Grand Case #rental car is a must# where there are 20-30 great restuarants, many right on the beach. The food in Grand Case is expensive but that's expected. The hotel staff was also very friendly. The only things I can say on the bad side, we had a Premier Ocean View Suite, which was expensive, and was supposed to have a full kitchen. When we got in the room however there was a Mini-Fridge, Microwave, and 2 Stove Burners. Also, the term Ocean View is a bit misleading, it's really a view of the pool and grounds, and then through some trees you can barely see a sliver of water that was the ocean, so that was dissapointing. Eating at the hotel restuarant for dinner is not recommended #very good taste, but expensive with unbelievably small portions - entrees looked like half appetizers).

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Hit the grocery store about 5 minutes drive from the hotel to pick up lunch supplies (assuming you have a fridge in your hotel room). By making our own beach lunches, we were able to save some money on food costs.

I had a great time

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Le Domaine. The hotel staff were very friendly, the breakfast was great, the ambiance of the hotel was breathtaking and the beach was gorgeous. I would stay at Le Domaine again when I return to St. Martin.

Well worth the price we paid...

Although we only stayed 1 night (arrived after 8:30 p.m. and left at 5 a.m.), we were very please with the accommodations. The room was clean and the staff very friendly. The hotel felt very safe and secure. There were only two negative things that we found. The first being that the hotel was very difficult to find in the dark...we actually had to stop and ask two boys playing on the side of the road where to go. The second being that there is one over-sized tub in the room. My wife just fell in love with it. But as for me, I like showers. There is a hand held shower head that you can "shower off" in the tub but the tub is kinda out in the open so it was very weird. Other than that, it was great for the night! Just make sure you get good directions to the hotel.

a wonderful hotel on a beautiful beach

a great choice as long as you're ok with the price tag and the difficult road [particularly if you're in an underpowered subcompact] over the mountain separating anse marcel from the rest of the island. the staff were extremely helpful and pleasant, particularly Anne at the front desk who went out of her way to help us. our first floor garden view room was very nice. breakfast overlooking the beach was pleasant and the staff were professional. a sailing, snorkeling trip to prickly pear island on the scooby too catamaran was a high point of our trip and the captain and his crew were great; we booked it through the hotel. the independently run beachfront shack adjacent to the hotel property is a great spot for a drink, but don't expect any nightlife in this bay. all of our meals other than breakfast were off property and on the french side and all were very good or excellent, except the kon tiki on orient beach [suggested by a guide book].

don't rely on plastic. bring plenty of US dollars [and some euros] because many places will let you pay in cash with dollars at a 1 for 1 rate with euros.

Nice relative to island standard

The hotel is on a beautiful beach that is shared with only one other hotel. That said, it is very secluded, and so if you want to go to other parts of the island or downtown/city center areas, a car is a must (though the roads are extremely narrow and not well marked, I'm glad we just took a cab). It was relatively quiet and peaceful, which we wanted (there were some younger families, but not too many, and I'd say most visitors were over 40...we wanted to avoid the college-aged crowd and there were none on this beach), and the beach was not crowded. The staff are friendly, the rooms are decent in size and average in terms of quality. The 4-star rating probably is most comparable to 2.5 stars in the U.S. The WIFI was very slow, but they said they were working on it. We had a garden-view room, and I would say that the extra cost for the ocean-view room probably isn't worth it based on how far back from the ocean you still would be. For meals: At the hotel they are quite expensive, so budget accordingly. The breakfast buffet is nice, not lavish, for $20/person. Tip: Don't eat dinner at Le Domaine, it is overpriced. Go to the Raddison (the hotel right next to this one) and they have a comparable restaurant on the beach for slightly better prices and a more diverse menu, or they also have another restaurant that is buffet-style (though it wasn't open every day) that is still a better deal for what you get. We finally walked around and discovered the marina that had another restaurant for the best prices on our last day (so can't vouch for the quality). If you have a car, you might stop at the grocery store on the way from the airport to the hotel for food (there's a small fridge in the room).
