Dawn Beach is located just across the bay, only a two-minute trip via the free water taxi. Orient Beach is a 12-minute drive away.Highlights
- Bungalows with ocean, marina, or garden views
- Free water taxi to Dawn Beach
- Home to exotic birds, sharks, turtles and other creatures
Rooms
The 50 rooms and suites are perched on the hillsides, hidden among tropical plants, natural rock outcroppings, and winding paths. The junior suites have private terraces or balconies offering spectacular views. Guest rooms have high-beamed ceilings and tile floors and are decorated with white rattan and local art. All rooms have air conditioning, satellite TV, in-room safe, mini-bar, coffee and tea maker, ceiling fan, direct-dial telephone, and free Wi-Fi.

It only takes a couple of minutes to get to Dawn Beach via the free taxi. On calm days, the beach is great for snorkeling, and on windy days there's nice wave action, good for body surfing. A freshwater pool is also on site. A sandy area in front of the hotel with tikis and hammocks is available for hotel guests.
Captain Oliver's is also home to exotic birds, sharks, turtles, and other creatures. The birds often greet guests crossing the International Bridge entrance to Captain Oliver's restaurant, which serves fresh seafood and French and Creole cuisine. The sharks, turtles, tarpon, and other native marine species live in a natural aquarium under the restaurant's glass floor. The Quai Ouest Restaurant and Bar, on the hillside overlooking the marina, is family operated and features authentic Italian cuisine. The Dinghy Dock Bar and Restaurant on the marina is famous for its happy hour from 5 pm to 7 pm where guests get to mix their own drinks for just $2. The hotel also offers sailing charters to nearby uninhabited islands, and the ferry to St. Barths departs directly from Captain Oliver's Marina.

Sailing with Moorings St Martin
The hotel is very convenient to Moorings base. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The room was spacious. Bathroom was clean...the facilities could use some updating, but nothing was bad. The restaurant was not as good as the little bar down the pier...not clear what they aim for with it.

SMX Weekend Escape
Capt Oiver's is a great value hotel that provides a great location for those that prefer the east side of SMX and are renting a car. It is a small hotel with a nice, relaxed marina atmosphere. The restaurant has good dining situated along the mariana dock, but the wait staff have the typical caribbean, laissez-faire service. My room was clean and quiet. SMX currently has significant road construction near the west side of Philipsburg, so traffic along the south side of the island was heavily jammed both on my way to the hotel and back to the airport. In my long weekend trip, I was content to be on the east side beaches for the duration and avoided the traffic concern. From the hotel, it is a short drive north to Baje Orientale or south to Philipsburg. For me, it was great mid-point location for a great price.

Shockingly primitive
Captain Oliver's said they would have a driver there to meet me when I landed. I waited 1-1/2 hours for them, and made two phone calls in the interim to say I'd prefer to just take a cab; each time they said the driver was "on the way" or "almost there". When I finally arrived, they seemed to think it was funny. You must have a rental car as there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING close to this place -- no groceries, drug stores, restaurants or shopping.

CAPTAIN OLIVER'S RESORT-
EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE. YES, IT IS A BIT OUT OF THE WAY,BUT WELL WORTH IT. EASY TO RENT A CAR. I GOT ONE FROM BUDGET FOR $137- A WEEK. EXPLORED THE ENTIRE ISLAND IN FIVE DAYS. THEY ALSO HAVE FREE INTERNET BUSINESS OFFICE (THOUGH i COULD NOT GET MY SERVER IN THE u.s. FOR SOME REASON). DAWN BEACH WESTIN short drive away has a better beach (cleaner) that on the Oyster Bay end of Dawn Beach..they also have a casino that opens at 5 PM nightly. Again, you will need a car to really enjoy the Island.

Beatifull view and amazing place
Resort is without own beach. Guest must use free of charge water taxi to Dutch side. Operator of the taxi is unpunctual. And standing on the direct tropical sunshine for at least 15-20 minutes is not so confortable. The restaurant in the marina is with excellent cuisine, but service is as unfriendly as the watertaxi.

Great get away
Captain Olivers had great views of the ocean and marina. Although most staff spoke French, they did understand basic English and were very courteous. The restaraunts and bars located at the marina were convienent, however, lunch/dinner prices were somewhat expensive at Captain Olivers restaraunt. The room was very nice and had a small kitchenette. It's a great location if you are wanting some peace and quiet. Not great if you are wanting to walk around and check out other sights/restaraunts, or bars. I would suggest renting car from the airport to save on taxi/shuttle fees. You can also rent one from the front office for about $35 a day. It's located in the marina so you can rent boats or take the ferries to other nearby islands.

They also have some cheap food prices and burgers and sandwiches. There's also a small store about 3 blocks away where you can get groceries, drinks, supplies at a reasonable price. If you are into the party/club scene, drive down to Maho Beach area.
