Family Trip in St. Martin

We came to St. Martin to celebrate my dad's sixtieth. It was four adults staying in a duplex with two beds and two baths. The Hotel Alamanda is a quaint little place in the middle of Orient Bay. The rooms are nothing fancy but will provide you everything you need. The rooms were clean, the electricity was good (although you need those European converters) and the water was hot. Our room had a little wet bar and fridge which was good for storing drinks and keeping left overs. It is clear the place was a little old and they would definitely benefit with new bedding/linens and maybe even new beds but for the price you can't complain. The morning breakfast is your standard french fare, baguettes, croissants tea/coffee and juice. The staff was very polite and helpful in finding us activities. The late night security also made us feel safe. I didn't actually swim in the pool but I sat pool side and it appeared clean. The true gem of this place is the beach. Its less than five minutes, just across the street from the hotel. It is simply beautiful. We took early morning walks, laid out during the day and even evening strolls. Just lovely. The restaurants and bars nearby weren't really our scene although very convenient. There are several restaurants, shops and a small supermarket just steps from the hotel. However, they very much catered to the European crowd as far as food choice and were pretty expensive. We only ate dinner here one night when it was raining and the food was nothing special. There is not much night life after 10 pm so be prepared to take a cab to the Dutch side of the island if you want dancing or late night bars. Overall it was a decent stay. We did want a bit more excitement and Orient Bay is pretty quiet. As a result we spent a ton on cab rides to Grand Case ($25-30 one way) and to the Dutch side of the island ($40-45 one way). For a beach vacation only this is a great, cost-effective place. But if you want to let loose a bit and have some fun, it's a little too far from everything else happening on the island.

Excellent location and staff.

The location is excellent and the staff was very accommodating. The breakfast, room, and value was good. The tubs are unusual and uncomfortable, the water pressure was poor. The pool was good. Being close to Grand Case restaurants was also important. Our first time going in November, will go back to going in April, May. Island needs more time to recover from autumn hurricanes and storms.

Good not great

The Alamanda is a good hotel that could be great with a few updates. We have been there 9 times and still has same devour. Beds are uncomfortable and shower is in need of new shower curtains the floor gets sopping wet. There is no place to get snacks at night. Breakfast is great and staff is very nice. Location makes this place a favorite.

Love the area!

Great check-in! Very nice area near restaurants, convenience store and the BEACH. Only drawback was the ice machine was out of order, however I was able to purchase ice at the store. A nice clean, laid back accommodation.

Great choice on Orient Bay

To say the Alamanda is a "resort" is a stretch. To say it is in a "resort area" is more accurate. The Alamanda is located next to a "square" with a number of restaurants, small businesses, a laundry (not a Laundromat), and a small grocery store. The grocery store is about the size of a U.S. convenient store and is across the street from "the square". Look for the name "Casino". Beach restaurants/bars and watersport activities are on the beach immediately to the south. The hotel was pleasant, clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful. We were there 6 days and saw no bugs. There is a concern about mosquito-born illness, but during 6 days, including a visit to the Loterie Farm and hike through the jungle to Pic du Paradis, we saw only two mosquitoes and we were not wearing repellant (although we had some at the ready). There were no rats (although there were three friendly cats that roamed the grounds). As far as we're concerned, the Alamanda is on the beach. Walk down a 50 foot path, cross a dirt beach access road and you're there. Because you're staying at the Alamanda, you get free access to the beach chairs from the beach restaurant next door. The Alamanda's swimming pool was large, clean, and you'll probably have it all to yourselves. The continental breakfast was good -- unlimited coffee or tea, a large glass of juice of your choice, a large serving of fresh fruit, and a basket of breads and pastries. You can order more (omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, etc.) at additional cost. However, we found the added cost items were the equivalent of food at Denny's. Contrary to their website, there was no airport shuttle. We took a taxi and it was $25 (dollars) one way for two people. We had an ocean view room on the second floor (recommended). You can see the ocean through the coconut trees from the ocean view rooms but you will not have an unobstructed view. The room was large, air conditioning worked well, there was a ceiling fan, several chairs, a table, and a king sized bed with a firm, but comfortable mattress. The TV brought in about 40 channels. The room had a kitchenette and a balcony with two chairs, foot rests, and tables. The hotel loaned us a converter for electricity for a refundable $100 deposit. The bathroom was large with a hair dryer and a selection of soaps/shampoos. The only beef with the bathroom was the tub (as others have stated). The tub had a significant step-over. It was wider at the top that the bottom. I could stand sideways and my heels and toes could touch the bottom sides. The shower head could be used as a regular shower or a hand-held one, but we always used it as hand-held. There was no shower curtain or shower doors and water went everywhere. There were no grab bars. Given the shape of the tub, high step over, water everywhere and no grab bars, I would caution you to be very careful getting in and out of the tub. About the exchange rate: As I write this, the exchange rate was $1 = 1.37 Euros. Prices are often listed in Euros. For a ballpark figure, add 40% more. For instance, if a hamburger is listed at 10 Euros, 40% of that is $4, so that hamburger will run you about $14. The beach restaurants/bars on the beach often have a 1:1 exchange rate and it's MUCH cheaper to eat there (or get food at the small grocery store), rather than eating at the "square" next door. To save a buck or two, the Butterfly Farm is located down the "beach access road" a 25 minute walk from the Alamanda. The road is well-traveled but narrow, so walk facing traffic and keep well to the side. We really liked the Alamanda, would recommend it (and its location) and would return.

Best place and location

Alamanda isn't a 5 star hotel on Orient Bay, but it's by far the best hotel there, and I've stayed in a few others to compare. It's centrally located on the beach and only a few steps from Orient Village where there are a number of restaurants and village entertainment on certain nights. Alamanda is clean and comfortable, and staffed with friendly, helpful people. The hotel offers a free continental breakfast every morning alongside the pretty kidney shaped pool, and American and French TV channels in the rooms for those inclined to watch. The internet service can be very slow at times and rooms are not equal in receiving it depending on the location. The ice machine is a must for vacationers but when it broke recently it's repair was either not a priority for the hotel or it was just going to be done on "Island Time." When I departed it's demise was on Day 4, and there were some pretty annoyed guests by then.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

While Grand Case is the restaurant capital on St. Martin, and worthy of a visit or two, there are a number of quality restaurants with delicous food within walking distance from Alamanda in Orient Village.
