Coastal villas in the heart of Vieques sit on former plantation grounds
Blue Horizon Boutique Resort stirs the romance of the Spanish Virgin Islands with a historic setting on the grounds of a former sugar plantation great house. The property, a collection of villas and rooms overlooking the Caribbean, maintains the period charm with antique-filled spaces and eclectic artwork. Guests retreat to vacation mode by lounging poolside, sipping cocktails under the stars or savoring authentic Puerto Rican fare at Carambola Restaurant.

Rustic charm fills the rooms and villas at Blue Horizon Boutique Resort. Perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, the former sugar plantation great house offers rooms with balconies, early 19th century North American antiques and a variety of art. Blue Horizon Boutique Resort achieves the feeling of a private hacienda ? complete with roomy verandas and tropical Puerto Rican fare at Carambola Restaurant, whose name means star fruit in Spanish. Open for breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and dinner from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the eatery is rich in ambiance, thanks to white linen tablecloths, dramatic lighting and pastoral furniture. Winter escape

We usually do not write reviews unless our experience has been extraordinarily good or bad. Our stay at the Blue Horizon was nothing short of amazing. The location and views are spectacular. There are wild horses that freely roam about. It is quiet at night (except for the sounds of nature) and yet it is very close to town (5 minute drive). At the end of the Inn's driveway there is a little store that can provide some snacks and drinks. My husband and I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. (We had some issues with the bio bay tour picking us up and they were very accommodating in helping us get that sorted out.) The restaurant (Carambola) was good as well. The rooms are charming, but know that there is no TV or WiFi. (But seriously, you are in paradise--watch TV at home.) There is some wifi in the bar and front desk area but they were not strong connections. The pool was beautiful and not very busy. There is a beach at the bottom of the hill but there are giant rocks and the surf was strong, so not ideal for swimming. There are so many other beaches on the island that it's not worth spending time at that one except for a romantic sunset stroll. Note that this place seems to be geared toward couples. We did not see any kids around which was just fine for us but may not be ideal for families. We had a lovely time and will definitely return to the Blue Horizon when we return to Vieques.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

In order to make the most of your time and to maximize the number of amazing beaches you can see, you definitely need a vehicle, preferably a jeep. Be sure to book early because they are the first vehicles to go. Some of the best beaches are accessible only by very rough roads and nothing but a jeep-like vehicle will make it through the ruts and puddles. We used Coqui Car Rental and everything went smoothly for us.

Great One Room Bungalow with a View

A wonderful secluded Property with awesome seaside views. Their are six little buildings spread out over the property that have two rooms each (total of 12 rooms).. the more expensive rooms have a seaside view. What you are really paying for here is the wonderful views and a sense that you mostly have the property to yourself. They have a wonderful infinite pool, nice restaurant and separate bar cabana and there are lots of sitting areas out by the ocean at the end of the property. You can walk down to a rocky beach - good for a stroll - but not a swim. I would have liked a small fridge in the room, but they give you a tiny cooler you c an use. They also do not have a TV any where on the property - might have been nice to have one at the Cabana Bar. A nice - but expensive ($200-250 / night) resort, good for late afternoons and early mornings.. the rest of the day you will be out exploring Esperanza and all the Beaches. A rental Jeep is a Must ($60 / Day).

Couldn't ask for more!

An absolutely beautiful getaway on the south shore of Vieques! Amazingly helpful staff, beautiful premises, comfortable room, delicious food and drinks. The photos and descriptions really just don't do it justice, you have to see for yourself. I would recommend it to anyone/everyone!

Definitely no recommendation

Summer 2013. Several cockroaches in the room – some dead, some running around alive and under the bed. Multiple lizards in the toilet running in and out of the insect screen which the personnel refused to fix. Spiders on the ceiling above the bed, mosquitos and many more insects. Uninhabitable. Money back? – No chance. The beach is full of huge rocks, little sand and the swimming pool is too small to be even worth mentioning. In case you get hungry, you might have to wait a few hours because kitchen opening hours are pretty limited. However, if you still want to book, don’t blame me for not warning you. I wish anyone would have given me a warning.

Blue Horizon Inn

My husband's and my experience of the Blue Horizon Inn was incredible! The place and grounds are gorgeous, not to mention the food and the staff. Janette, Carla, Jamille and so many others really went out of there way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We will definitely go back. As a matter of fact we loved it so much that we plan on making this an annual trip.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

You can walk or drive to Billi's. The walk is about 20 minutes but doable if you enjoy walking. Billi's is a cozy little restaurant right across the street from the ocean. The prices are descent and the food even better. But, if you want to stay local visit Carambola, this restaurant is on the premises of the hotel. A bit expensive, but when you are on vacation who doesn't like to splurge a little. The food is to die for!!!!

Serene setting, wonderful staff

This inn set on a cliff above the Carribean Ocean, has a lovely pool and is close to the town of Esperanza. The staff are excellent and the bar was a nice place to end the wonderful days we spent on the beaches of Vieques. The restaurant serves interesting meals but the food was too salty. The rooms are nice but could use a little touching up.

Perfect Getaway

Inn at the Blue Horizon was an ideal place to stay during our recent trip to Vieques. The staff were wonderful, very helpful in providing recommendations and making sure we had an enjoyable stay. The rooms and decor were really lovely, food and drinks were great, warm/clean pool, and incredible view of the ocean. Highly recommend and will definitely go back.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

I would highly recommend both the Paddle Boarding/snorkeling tour and the night-time kayaking trip to Bio-Bay. Both were the highlights of the trip.

Honeymoon

We are a couple in our 20's that came here for our honeymoon. We could not have asked for more. Any activities on the island the front desk set up for us, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly and at first we had planned on going around the island every day but the hotel was so great we just stayed in most days. It has the BEST food in Puerto Rico and pool is so nice to relax. Truly the best trip I've been on! Ps this place was SO quiet. Was there 10 days and saw only a half dozen other guests. VERY RELAXING!
