Dining

Eighty 20 Bristo
Against the backdrop of a minimalist dcor in shades of black, white, and orange, this South Beach-inspired bistro features a cuisine that ranges from modern interpretations of classics, such as the Baby Kobe Burgers, to full on fusion dishes such as the Grilled Caribbean Jerk Shrimp with Coconut Risotto and Pineapple 'Pico de Gallo'.
In the bistro tradition, a great variety of salads, sandwiches, and tapas are among the menu offerings at this San Juan restaurant at the Verdanza Hotel.
Damin Hernandez, Chef de Cuisine, is a classically-trained chef who has mastered the art of blending 'haute cuisine' with his own homegrown spin using locally-grown ingredients such as root vegetables, fresh fruits and herbs. Chef Damin oversees the kitchen for the Eighty20 Bistro.
Coladas
It's the first authentic Puerto Rican eatery to become a signature restaurant for a major local hotel, the Verdanza Hotel in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico.
Reminiscent of a 70's tavern and featuring a stylish dcor in a rich palette of jewel-tone colors, the walls in the bar are covered with album jackets from local pop artists and other stars from Puerto Rico's 'Nueva Ola' music - as well as from legendary salsa performers: Fania All Stars, Hector Lavoe, and La Lupe, among others. A shaded veranda allows clients to sit outdoors as the sunset gives way to the nightlife Isla Verde, Puerto Rico.

Precruise stay

The staff was helpful, they didn't know where the dining options were other than the restaurants in the hotel, the next day we saw some fast food outlets that we may have chosen had we been told about them. We liked it being close to airport. It was easy to grab a cab to the port the next day. We recommend this place.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

We got in at supper time, the staff didnot tell us that a couple of steps out the door were fast food dining options. We would have liked to know that when we asked about dining options.

Great Service with a great price!!!

Right across from the beach, easy access and free bicycle taxis if you are too lazy for even the 50 feet. Service was great and they even upgraded to a poolside room with a balcony. I stayed at the Intercontinental on the previous trip and these rooms were just as nice for much less!

Comfortable,a block away from the beach!

Great hotel, clean rooms and bathroom. Our key cards didn't work a couple of times, but we got them changed quickly and easily. Our bathroom also had some pipe problem so we were moved to another room, but the staff was very helpful about it. The hotel is a block away from the Isla Verde beach. It wasn't entirely spotless, but overall a good beach. The only problem is you have to cross a busy street, but you just have to be careful and cars will stop, but you have to be assertive. There was a supermarket within walking distance, a nice club called Bed Lounge, right on the Isla Verde Ave, along with some pretty good restaurants, like Ceviche. Ceviche is also walking distance but better during the day, definitely take a cab at night. The service at the hotel was great. The door was opened for us every time, the staff explained to us how to get to Old San Juan via bus, and told us places to eat, pretty much answered every question we had. They will also order cabs for you. Overall, very happy with the experience. Isla Verde is a great location for tourists, however, it is the farthest from Old San Juan, so if you plan on visiting plan to stay all day, so you don't have to make multiple trips, cabs can get expensive. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

Definitely check out Shannan's Irish Pub! There is a stage and a very large dance floor and bar. It's unlike other Irish Pubs, almost like a concert venue. We went on Wednesday night and saw Madre Tierra, they were great, played popular rock music. It closes relatively early, I think around 2 AM, unlike other places that are open until around 4 or 6 AM, so get there early. Lots of fun!

Good pre-cruise hotel

Close enough to the airport that the rental car company took us to the hotel with their van. There is a casino right across the street at the Embassy Suites. Restaurant was pretty good and reasonable. Easy to get a taxi to the pier. Only negative is there was no elevator to the second floor but the bellmen get the luggage there for you so not a big deal.

The opinion of a travel professional...

My job is to inspect hotels and I see over 600 of them per year. After reading the complaints here, I was admittedly concerned. But a colleague of mine assured me that it was a great hotel. - Upon arriving, I was greeted by a beautiful lobby & accommodating staff. We had originally booked a king bed on the club floor, as the rate included free continental breakfast. But as 2 single women, we much preferred double beds. When we mentioned this during check-in, the staff immediately offered us a double bedded room on another floor and gave us passes so we could still have our free breakfast. Before heading to the room, we also received some delicious coconut sorbet. So far, so good. - When we got to the room, things looked great. The beds were insanely comfortable and there was digital AC. The bathrooms were good too, as the tub/shower & toilet were in one room and the sink/vanity/blow-drier was in another. Very helpful when 2 girls are trying to get dressed! Spacious closet with tons of hangers and a safe. The rooms were also cleaned well daily. Negatives in the room: some tears to our desk chair, a tear to the comforter (which I NEVER use anyway) and a scratch to the armoire. Boo-hoo. Totally pleased otherwise. - The pool area was gorgeous! Little kids seemed to love the water play area. FYI, the "business center" is in the fitness room on the 8th floor (weird but worked fine!). Negative: The hot tub was broken on the only chilly, rainy day San Juan had in months. Bummer. - The beach was a 3 minute walk away, while the El San Juan hotel (featuring lots of nightlife) took 10 minutes to walk to. Buses running to Condado & Old San Juan are across the street (75 cents; timing is random & they stop around 8:15pm). There are a few decent Puerto Rican restaurants nearby, as well as a Walgreens (buy your sunblock/hair products in San Juan and save the checked bag fee!). Cabs to Old San Juan are $20, so get a group together and split it. - To summarize: I completely enjoyed my time at the Verdanza. If you want 5 star service & amenities, head to the Ritz Carlton. If you don't have beaucoup money and want a comfy stay with friendly, helpful staff? This is the place for you.

The hotel was slightly off the beaten track and very quiet. The pool area was fabulous, not huge, but clean and beautifully landscaped and very quiet. The staff at the hotel was very helpful and pleasant. I would go back.

Bday in PR

Went down to PR with friends for a long weekend. For the price the hotel was a good value. The rooms were a little on the small side but decent. The bathroom was small. Couldn't beat the location - close to the beach, restaurants, walgreens, and other hotels and resorts within walking distance. Old San Juan was 15 minutes away. Close to the airport but didn't notice airport noise. All of the hotel staff was helpful in suggesting places to go and places to eat. We definitely took advantage of the onsite concierge and rented a car for the day to go to the rainforest.

Mi Casita restaurant is a block away from the hotel and has good local food. Also, most of the tours are tourist traps - we saved money by going to Casa Bacardi, Luquillo Beach, and El Yunque on our own.
