no elevator and bad breakfast

My classic room was on the 4th floor..it was pretty much a workout w no elevator. The contental breakfast at rick cafe suck..either coffee w milk no half and half or orange juice..no tea bag. You get 1 type cearal raisen brand and two toast bread w 1 little frozen butter and 1 jam.. everyday you get the same thing. So if your looking for meat and fruits for breakfast this is not a place to book..the lobby look nice only..rooms decoration is outdated and small with no sitting place byside sitting on your bed..shower presure on and off hot and cold water.

Great location

Walk to everything that you need - even the cruise terminal. Friendly, helpful staff with good suggestions for places to eat etc. Lack of elevator a little troublesome (it was pointed out in advance though). Optional porter assistance with luggage would be appreciated, especially if your room is on the 4th floor and you suitcase is heavy! Overall a very pleasant experience.

PERFECT LOCATION!

Good experience. Perfect location and good staff. However, you must remember that this is a 3-star hotel, not a 5-star hotel. It means that the room is small and you don´t have elevator.

Sensible choice

If you want to spend most of your time in old San Juan this hotel is a sensible choice. The location could not be better since all the major sights are within easy walking distance. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. Don't expect luxury - the rooms, while decorated in a very eclectic style, are pretty basic. Be warned that there is no elevator so the hotel is definitely not handicapped accessible. While I was there, a lady on crutches was having to hobble up 2 flights of stairs. I was happy with my choice because the location was exactly what I wanted and the price was reasonable.

great location with a true moroccan ambiance.

rooms are small but the atmosphere makes up for it. the staff was super accommodating. it is important to note there are no elevators but again the staff was most helpful in getting bags up to the room. a nice change from the big hotels and the location can't be beat!

Everything I read in advance was true

We chose this hotel for a single pre-cruise night knowing from other reviews that it wasn't perfect. My priorities are, in order: cleanliness, location, price and amenities, like free breakfast. It was clean, the location is fantastic in old San Juan, the price was excellent, and it had a very modest continental breakfast included. But, echoing what others have said in earlier reviews, here's stuff you need to know before you choose this place over pricier ones in the old town area, or go with something along the Condado beach row. This hotel is 5 stories tall and there are no elevators, so you might have a long climb. Worse, there's no one assigned to help with your bags, making the climb to your room quite a workout, especially around the narrow, winding staircase. The people in front of us insisted that someone help them with baggage and, after a delay, a guy in scruffy jeans showed up, but clearly it's not a service they provide. That surprised me because I read so many comments giving them low ratings partly because of this fact, coupled with there being no elevator. Obviously, they can't do much about an elevator, but they certainly would boost comments if they offered baggage service. Another downside is noise, varying greatly depending on bar activity. We were there Saturday night, and it was LOUD. One side of the building that apparently had been open, has been enclosed with several stories of large glass panels, creating an atrium. The sounds of partying echo very loudly upward. The majority of rooms seem to surround the atrium, and I've read that rooms facing the street can encounter lots of late night street noise. We anticipated this negative, brought earplugs, and slept well, but others have rated it unacceptable for noise reasons. We had no problems with the hot water, but we didn't place a lot of demand on it. The employees were fine, neither solicitous nor surly. Finally, they don't seem well organized. While we were checking in, one of the couples that had checked in ahead of us came back to complain that the room hadn't been made up. In our case, they had our reservation, but tried to charge me for the night, though I had pre-paid it last September. I knew the date and amount of my payment, and they quickly admitted their error, but it conveys sloppy management. In fact, they operate from a laptop as they sit at a table, with reservation printouts next to them, and disappear behind a curtain a couple of times with each reservation. Comes across as amateurish and drawn out. If you're using this hotel for a pre-cruise stay, make sure what pier your ship uses. We had thought it was Old San Juan piers, just a few blocks walk from the hotel, but our ship used the Pan American Pier, a $15-$20 taxi ride away. Bottom line is if you can live with the downsides for a short stay, the location is wonderful, the price is very reasonable, it's clean, and you're in a centuries-old building with lots of character and charm.

Old San Juan hotel

Receptionist was very helpful in changing our room to a lower floor; no elevator. He also gave us a gift card to a nice restaurant. We expected a few more amenities: soap dish in the shower, for example, & a longer shower curtain that wouldn't allow water to seep onto the floor; maybe a bathmat to stand on. Appreciated the complimentary breakfast & the 'Casa Blanca' Old World charm.

They Gave our Room away

I had prepaid this room and noted that we were a late arrival. We got to the hotel at 12:30am to find that they didn't have a room for us - they had given it away. The young man working lied about why they couldn't accomodate us. They moved us to a hostel in their group. It had a kingsized bunk bed - couldn't even sit up in the bed. There were no blinds or curtains in the room or bathroom. Absolutely no privacy. I would never stay there again as I feel like I spent $190 for a $50 room.

to see beautiful Old San Juan

I was happy with the staff and location of this hotel. Unfortunately the two amenities I was looking forward to, and were advertised as current amenities on their web site, were not available. These were the wireless Internet and the roof top lounge with tub/spa area. They told me they did not have a router for the wireless Internet, and the roof top lounge would not be ready for another 8+ months.

Great location in Old San Juan

The decorator did a great job bringing out the romance and mystique of the property and the location is superb. The stairs are challenging for older guests. Some of the staff were excellent, but others, not so much. The bath had a beautiful vessel sink, but the shower lacked anywhere to put your soap or razor. You had to hold them or put them on the floor. The property was well-priced for the area.
