Historic San Juan hotel blends serenity and sophistication
InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino has the look and feel of Miami Beach hotels in their heyday. The hotel was designed and built in the late 1950s by a prominent architect and maintains suave sophistication. From the lobby, two grand staircases overlook tall, arched windows, soft chairs and high-backed benches. The lounge is a rich collection of marble, dark wood and candles. Guest rooms are elegant. Canopies of trees, gardens and stone fountains open onto one of Puerto Rico's most beautiful beaches.

great vacation

This was the best hotel for location and the staff was wonderful in helping you and Ray went out of his way to help and was always so happy. The location was very secure and within walking distance of Walgreens, Burger King, Church's Chicken, Taco Bell, Ky Fried Chicken,Pondarosa steak house, Denny's, so you have alot of choices to eat at. The bus is very close distance to take to Old San Juan for $0.75 then take the green trolly in old San Juan for free to go all over the town. Just beware of the con men there, he told us he and his dad were robbed and needed $6.00 for a cab ride to the airport and when we told him we didn't have cash on us he left fast and went to the other people there. Just beware of the scams. The hotel was just wonderful and clean and even checked us in 2 hours early then suppose to. This was by far a great vacation place. And I would go back to this hotel.

Vacation

You have to pay resort fees on top of what you already paid. Also you need to pay for parking which is very expensive. They had construction going on in the room above mines starting at 10am-4pm. It was hard to rest b/c of this. They charge for everything and you can not even rest. I will not be returning to this resort.

Great Last Minute Honeymoon

My husband and I came home on Monday and booked our travel the next day on Tuesday and flew out Wednesday. So please note we didn't plan months in advance. With that being said, the staff services were impeccable between Alexis at the Lobby Bar, Nestor the Concierge, Hilton our room attendant, and one of the door men (cannot remember his name) were superb employees. Our stay was fantastic for a last minute trip. Beach was clean, great staff on the beach to bring us drinks - especially Rose. The Ciao Bar on the beach has awesome food and better priced than the hotel. I would say that the hotel itself needs a little bit of updating. We noticed mold around the AC vent, mold around the shower curtain and ceiling in the bathroom, our shelf in the bathroom kept falling off the wall, the AC unit sits right above the vanity and started collecting condensation and thus produced a some water leakage into the room, but that only occurred the last night we were there. Otherwise, the bed was comfortable and the view of the ocean and resort were awesome from room 1512.

Eat and buy drinks at Ciao Beach Bar. It's practically 50% than the hotel and it literally sits right outside of the pool area - you can't miss it.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful! The room was more than adequate. Its proximity to the beach was to die for!! However, the hotel restaurant was extremely over priced! $60/couple for a buffet breakfast of powdered eggs, sausage, bacon, french toast, cold and hot cereal and fruit was way too much. Also, the hotel's policy to hold $100/night ($400 in our case)on our credit card in case of incidentals was preposterous! We are not rich by any means so that really tied of a lot of our spending money. Therefore, we were not able to do everything we planned to do while there, i.e. touring the island and car rentals.

Additional Costs At Check IN

The associate during check in was hard to understand (partly because I am an English only speaking individual and some understanding was expected for this) primarily because she was so soft spoken and mumbled. Also during check-in she mentioned that this travel retailer that begins with "O" and ends with "rbitz" didn't charge the right price and mumbled something about additional taxes, as it turns out that means you owe us an additional $150+ dollars if you want a hotel key. What are you to do after a day of travel, luggage in hand and no internet? Turns out you grumble and pay it. Next get to the room which had a distinct smell of 3 week spring break alcohol and vomit smell that has been attempted to covered up with some Lysol or something which made it bearable but not great. Then you go to use the bathroom and Toilet was right next (by right next I mean practically in) to the shower of which you hear a dripping sound and think what could that be? Yep you guessed it the tub half full of water and no body let the drain out - either from cleaning crew or that slow drip. While the hotel met our purposes (roof over our head and pillow to sleep on) I can't say that I would recommend it. Elevators worked sporadically just not well maintained. The best part of the whole place was the bellhops and valet personnel at the front - always friendly, greeted us leaving and coming and always provided tips and directions with no expectations of receiving anything extra for it. This is one of those hotels you can tell was really nice about 10 years ago but now they are riding it out till they HAVE to repair because no body wants to stay in it anymore. Location was good right on the beach and pool was nice.

WHAT A HASSLE!!!

We arrived later in the evening and the front desk customer service representative, Jennifer seemed quite rude. Our first night there our remote control was not working. The following day after taking a shower, I realized that the room did not have a blow dryer. For the remainder of the stay we had no cable in the room. When we had asked, they had no response and apparently they did not care. We did not spend much time in the room, but would have liked the option of being able to watch tv while in the room. Also, the room key was not functioning on one of the days. After returning from an excursion, the first thing I wanted to do was go back to the room and get comfortable, but since the key was not working, we had no access into the room. We had asked housekeeping if she could let us in our room and she said she would call security to open the door. After waiting over fifiteen minutes, I decided to go and get a new key. Of course, they did NOT apologize for the inconvinience!!! Overall, I would rate the hotel three stars. The pool area is very nice as well as the beach. The hotel lacks customer service skills. If you are looking for a nice hotel go next door to El San Juan hotel and casino.

The service was good; however, there is no free internet or complimentary usage of a computer unless you go to the concierge desk. Breakfast buffet is expensive. Positives include free sauna and steam room usage.

Gone Downhill!!!

I previously stayed at this resort in 2010 and loved it. My husband and I returned August 2012 and were extremely disappointed. The bathroom walls and ceiling had mold and mildew all over them. There was no stool at the vanity, the table in the sitting area was severely cracked in three places, and the cable channels were not clear. The maid service was below satisfactory, and there was a consistent shortage of bath linens. We attempted ordering room service, but they were always missing at least one item that we wanted to order from the menu. The free breakfast buffet was great, but the majority of the wait staff were inattentive and unprofessional--we witnessed an argument between 2 waiters over taking care of their respective tables. The staff at the pool and the beach were not very friendly or helpful. They always seemed bothered when asked to set-up beach chairs/umbrellas or additional beach towels. There was also an additional charge for beach umbrellas that apparently is not covered by the resort fee. The good things about the resort are the location and the swim-up bar. I will not be going back to this resort.
